At about 5 30 am, on the 1st July 1863, Lieutenant Marcellus Jones fired a carbine at an officer of a marauding Confederate infantry brigade*

The Confederates, a few brigades of the Army of Northern Virginia, were looking to steal some shoes from a factory in Gettysburg*

But from then on, events outraced all planning*

Within hours several divisions of the Confederate Army of North Virginia were fighting a similar force from the Union Army of the Potomac*

By early afternoon the Confederate commander, General Robert E. Lee, had arrived on the battlefield. And both sides were rushing up reinforcements*

By nightfall the Union army was forced back onto Cemetery ridge. Early on July 2nd, they were joined by their newly promoted commander, General Meade*

The Confederates spent the next morning moving into a position to attack. The clock is now turned back to 4 pm, July 2nd, 1863*
