Just wanted to let everyone know that a local (San Diego) mag interviewed the
folks at FTL and they mention DungeonMaster in the article. According to
Wayne at FTL it should be hitting the shelves in about a month.

(Go easy on me! I am just reporting what I read!)

Ahem...OK...we can only communicate what we hear/are told! Since Darlah and I
live in San Diego (the home of FTL) we sometime get some "inside" info.

I am just reporting what I read in the Byte Buyer, a local bi-weekly mag.

Mark One of the illustrious SysOps!

Yes Sundog is still one of the best space adventure games for the ST, Yes
Dungeonmaster is supposed to set a new standard in D&D type games, But FTL has
no credibility with me, they have great excuses, but no credibility. I'll
believe it when I see it.

FYI ONLY. I bought OIDS yesterday and in the packaging is an FTL newsletter
showing a Dungeonmaster screen, describing its features, and chats with the
author. Credibility, I admit is way low. This has to be the longest promised
game for the ST that comes to my mind. Still, I am keeping the faith. I
think it will be out before Christmas. It's fine with me that they spent
another year perfecting it. The last thing the ST needs is another half
*ssed, half finished game. One need only read the comments from this game
category on Genie to see the miles of disappointments because the software
company rushed their product to market.

Our store's salesman at CSS tells us they are expecting to recieve
DUNGEONMASTER next week. If this ends up being true, then you can expect to
start seeing it in stores in a week or two. If it turns out to be
wrong....well, we've been disappointed before...

My fingers are crossed.

Our distributor (CSS) said they expect it to arrive this upcoming week. It's
likely that FTL told CSS that they would be shipping it on that timeframe, but
you never know with second-hand information. Calling FTL to find out, if one
is that interested, is an excellent idea, Joe. Let us know what you find out.

One of the local stores ordered Dungeonmaster and Oids, having been told both
were available. Only Oids arrived, along with a note saying something about
"shipping delays" (probably a fancy name for last-minute bugs being
discovered). Sounds like it's definitely close (but I wouldn't give odds on
DM making it here in time for Christmas).

FLASH!!!!!

Latest WORD on DungeonMaster!!!!!!

A local San Diego dealer was surprised to see one of the guys from FTL show up
at his doorstep with a *FINISHED* DungeonMaster in his hands!

Seems FTL wanted to "check it out" on a Mega before shipping.

FTL rep said that the boxes are ready, the manuals are ready, EVERYTHING is
ready. Should be IN store sometime this week!

Of course, this is just a rumor! :-)

Yes Virginia, there really is a DungeonMaster!

Stopped in a local dealer around 6:00PM last night. This is the same dealer
that was the Mega "test site" for the beta DungeonMaster. FTL decided to pay
the dealership back by selling him two cases of DungeonMaster at a special
price. They received the two cases (48 copies) at 4:00PM and only had 7 left
at 6:00PM!

The dealership owner's comments were, "I've NEVER seen such excitement over a
game before".

They had a Mega set up running the game and plan on leaving it that way thru
XMAS. (Yes, they have more copies coming today!)

Four copies sold in the 10 minutes I was in the store..one of which went to
your's truly!

So.....was it worth the wait? You bet your bippy it was!

Played it for 2 hours last night and plan on playing it some more one I get
off line here.

What do I like about it? The graphics are excellent. The sounds are
digitized sounds (like the sound of an opening door..or iron gate!) The user
interface is very easy to learn and use. You can play from the keyboard if
you wish. It starts off "easy" and gets progressively more difficult. You
really get the "feel" that you are venturing down into a deep dark dungeon.

What don't I like about it? Just one thing (at least so far)...it is copy
protected! Not even the "latest" back-up programs will phase it! FTL does
offer a back-up disk for $10.00 though.

Would be nice to be able to run it from my hard drive but it really isn't
necessary. FTL did and excellent job of loading LARGE amounts of data at a
time so the disk access' are in-frequent. (But when it DOES go to the disk...
it takes some time.)

Oh yeah, for those that may have been "living" in a dungeon and have never
seen the demo of DungeonMaster, the object of the game is pick different
"champions" to venture into the Dungeon Maze of your old "master" and recover
the Firestaff. Many "evil" things await you and you must be careful where you
turn. There are puzzles to solve, magical spells to be cast and objects (such
as keys...LOTS of keys) to be found and returned to their rightful places.

I'm certainly "hooked". Now I hope Santa DOESN'T bring me Star Trek for
XMAS...I won't have time enough for both!

Folks: I've just spent several hours in the catacombs of Dungeon Master......
Run! (Don't walk!) to your dealer and plunk down your cash...it's the best-
implemented RPG (Role Playing Game) I've seen! It even puts Bard's Tale to
shame! FTL took their time, but came up with an EXCELLENT piece of gameware.
I must agree completely with STACE....I never got to Star Trek tonight, I
spent too long in DM! I hope that we'll start seeing more ST-ware of this
quality...

First of all I am in no way affiliated with FTL. I am a user and game
player just like everyone else, and have awaited DungeonMaster for 2 years.
I was very skeptical when DungeonMaster arrived on 1 single sided disk. I
mean, the 30 second demo itself took up a whole disk and didn't even have a
game on it!
I eventually realized what had happened. DungeonMaster takes an
incredibly long time to boot, either they are using some massive data
compression techniques or recognize a 1 meg computer and load alot of data
into the computer on bootup, or both. I'm still not sure. But I do know that
DungeonMaster is packed with incredible animated, working graphics and
DIGITIZED sound. I have seen games on 3 disks without as much flexibility or
playability.
Everything in the 3D maze works. Levers, buttons, switches, traps, all
work by moving the hand icon and pressing the button. Usually there is a
satisfying digitized sound accompanying the action. Wonderful!!
Switching objects and using objects among the characters is easy and very
intuitive. To eat something, move the food to the mouth icon, then click the
button...this is accompanied by the mouth chewing and a digitized gulping
noise.
When you throw and object, like a dart, the dart moves through the space
and you hear what happens.
3 Dimensional monsters attack with fluid movements (and again digitized
sound effects.) Torches get dimmer over time, and the effects are noticible.
While moving away from an object that's making a noise, the noise gets dimmer.
These are examples of the incredible detail that's put into the progrm.
Every step is very careful and very absorbing.
THe game is role-playing with weapons, a magic system (very different from
normal, I don't understand it yet), mystery items, up to 4 characters, and
beautiful graphics.
I can see they haven't been lounging around for 2 years. They've been
designing the most incredible gaming experience I've seen on any computer so
far.
One thing I'm concerned about is that this game seems very easy. I've gone
pretty far without hardly even sweating. Well I must say it FEELS like
"pretty far" but there may be alot more ahead. I don't know. EOF

HTCOLONNA--- Yes, they are using some incredible data compression
techniques.... it's truly amazing that the routines can squish & unsquish
enough data fast enough for digitized sound and animation! What I like most
is the minimal amount of disk access after the initial load...unlike Bard's
Tale. (P.S.- If I seem to compare DM and BT alot, it's simply because I used
to feel that BT was the State of the Art, until DM came along!) Take Care!

Jesus Christ Almighty!! I just spend 2 hours with this thing. I forgot I
was playing a game. I was deep down inside some dungeon somewhere fighting
all these creatures and not knowing what to expect.
This thing is incredible. BUY IT. If you know how hard I am on software,
this is state of the art to the max. BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT.
There are a few things I don't like. Would someone make some comments on
these?
1-the magic system hs me pretty confused. Is it supposed to leave me
confused and just experiment? I do have 1 very basic spell working. And
that's the light spell.
2-there's too much food around this place. I eat better in DungeonMaster
than I do in real life. That's disappointing because it means that this part
of the game isn't challenging. (Worrying about food). And my characters are
all fat and content.
3-I get really confused between the orders of characters. First you've got
the order of the characters across the top of the screen fronm right to left,
and this is the order of the characters as you picked them in the Hall of
champions. Then you've got 1 of those characters who is the leader (and whose
hand you are controlling). Then you've got a combat order in the upper right
hand of the screen. Then you've got the spell casting order with the spell
menu. Finally you have the weapons order with the list of weapons.
And you know what's so bad about all of this? All those 'orders' can be
mixed up while playing for awhile - every one of those different "orderings"
can have a different sequence. VERY confusing. At least there's 4
characters. If there were 8 it would be really hair pulling/ Am I missing
someting here?? This is my biggest frustration. But learning this great game
and playing it are worth it...this is a minor flaw in the ointment compared to
the rest of the game.

Henry, Save your food! You will need it!

To paraphrase one of the guys from FTL, "You can play for hours and hours...
actually forgeting that you are just playing a game and, just when you think
you found that "final" key or solved that tough puzzle, you will discover a
whole new "area" to explore!"

I too am still a little confused about casting spells and the order. The key,
obviously, to virtually all spells are the scrolls (and the "novelette" at the
beginning of the manual).

Regarding the attacking order, just remember to move your champion's postition
(upper right hand corner) so that your stronger champions are at the front.

Keep trach of which champion is the leader. Don't try to do any kind of
attack action with a champion that is in the rear of the group.

Have you gotten to the room with 9 different "trap-doors" that have to be
stepped on in a certain order in order to get out? :-)

It is shortly after *that* room that I got attacked (and wiped out) by a
throng of mummys!

Love this game!

By your last comment Mark, I can see that there truly is randomness in the
encounters. I saw no throng of mummys after that room. I did meet four
shrieker, squeekers or whatever they were called. (delicious)

I ran out of light and havn't figured out the light spell part. I have
wondered about all the hooks on the walls. Any useful purpose?

Bright torches make for a much easier time of seeing, but that seems to be a
serious problem in maintaining them. Oh well, we'll figure it out. This game
has the power to cause obsession. Beware!

As a last experiment, I tried leaving out the main entrance. But the door was
solid. Kicking and banging on the door was entertaining, but fruitless...
Also, great effect when a person is fleshed back to life.

The light spell is easy, Drabik. Use the least amount of power you have to
use at first, and THEN use the syllable that has to do with things related to
light...I don't think the manual says "light" but mentions something that
gives off light. With those 2 syallables you'll cast a real weak light
spelll..but you can cast several of them.

I'll swap you hint for hint. How do you use a scroll? You're obviously
using a scroll found in the altar...and there are scrolls with spells on them,
how do you invoke them??

STACE, oh I'm having a great time, no doubt...but haven't run across
anything really difficult yet. Stepping on 9 stones was neat, but certainly
no real "puzzle". I'm not saying that I'm not having a good time, because
this is fantastic, but it's lacking a little SO FAR (I must qualify I'm just
starting) in difficult and challenging use of the intellect. It seems to be
more graphic flash and fun. Which is fine - just an observation.

I just got this game today, and I think it is incredible. They paid great
attention to details. When I was first p[laying it, and had already lost my
two fighters, I was just fooling around trying to trap some mummies o outside
of a gate so I could do a little more exploring, well I was a little slow in
pressing the button and the mummies walked right under the gate. s you may
have guessed the gate came crashing down and crushed one of them. Also
sometimes when you trow a trowing star or knife and it doesn't kill them, it
sticks in them (but you don't see it) and after you do kill the monster, you
hear the digitized klank of the weapon falling to the floor. RReally nice!

Here's some of my comments on this excellent game. As far as I can tell, there
is no order to anything except marching. In a fight, it's just as much and as
many as you can unleash. And this real time fighting is great! Just like being
there...you wait and you die. The food is very abundant on level one, but it
takes a drastic dive on elevel two. I thought it was pretty easy also, just
wait. The only way those ugly blue monsters seem to die is by using something
other than my own magic or weapons. I also haven't found a fountain on level
two yet. Has anybody figured out any uses for some of the stuff you find, or
is it just extra baggage? I found a mirror of dawn, but it doesn't register
anything in the action hand. (vampire repellent maybe?)

CURTICE - think about what causes the pits to open. They are not always
open - something CAUSES them to open. You can simulate was causes them to
open, and what causes them to close.......

Another hint for everyone - what appears dangerous to you and your
characters (and is bad and dangerous for them) can also be bad and dangerous
for monsters! What causes damage and strange, hurtful things to happen to you
can do the same to monsters. This hint will help out! I promise! By the
way I'm still struggling with level 2...me and my big mouth.

Here is a very interesting little action I stumbled upon the other day (I have
had the game for over a week!-- I ordered it over a year and a half ago
direct from FTL, and to their credit they airmailed a copy to me) if you can't
seem to hack it out with a particular set of monsters try to lure them under a
gate with an opening/closing switch and when they get under it, slam on that
button. The results are quite effective. The only drawback is that you don't
get any experience from this type of killing. How about some of you guys/gals
give us what four characters compose your party and their current levels(just
one of the thousands of things I love about this game).

BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the help HT, but it turns out that I figured it out on my own. It
was foolish of me to think that just because I couldn't see the pressure
plates, they didn't exist. I've gotten two levels below that and every level
seems to have new, meaner monsters. I found an easy way to kill those
purple worms, well not easy, but if you just move around in a circle,
hitting and then moving, hitting and moving, they won't be able to touch oyou
and you can kill them with little dammage to yourself.

Yepper, this is the game to beat all games, at least until I wear out both of
by disk drives. Nice play, whished that they had changes a few of the sounds.
I have had this program just over three hours, jumped on Genie or a hit or two
<wink> to get me rolling. I think I will wright a small clip for Telatalk
sometime this week. This program is that good.

Has anyone figured out how to get past the first iron gate on level 3? It has

Please help me with purple worms. EMAIL if necessary. I think my problem
is that I reincarnated ALL of my characters - no one is of high enough level.
The most I get is about 20 points a shot with a novice fighter and axe - and
she dies before I kill even 1 worm, much less 4.
This depresses me. My character is a beautiful black woman scantily
clothed. I have had a hard time putting more clothes on her than her little
bra that she wears while fighting others. I think she's having an affair with
the main character in my game, Heinrich, and he gets sad and lonely when she
dies by these purple worms. Please help!

HT, the best way to get the worms is to move in circles. Hit them and then
move to the left and turn right. They will move in front of you, and then you
can hit them again. If you do it long enough, you will kill them. It will
take awhile but you will come out relatively unhurt.... I found the Firestaff
not too long ago, but alas I'm short one RA key. According ot one of the
scrolls, I will have to go down another level to find it. The staff is
around the sixth or seventh level (I haven't been counting). The previous
levels are pretty hard. If you think the worms are hard, wait until you
reach the flying snakes!!!

OK, here's one for you...

I'm stuck at the gate with the sword behind it. I haven't solved the
glimmering gate with the treasure chest but have completely explored the
entire area. I used the copper coin to open the other gate (to give you an
idea of where I am). Can someone tell me how to get through the gate? Both
sides are flanked with water fountains but otherwise there isn't anything
special -- no buttons, keys, etc, to open the gate.

I assume it has to do with the treasure chest behind the blue glimmering wall
but I'll be damned if I can get through. ANY help will be GREATLY appreciated
-- even a straight-out answer will suffice. If you care not to give it away
here in open forum, please send any replies to TOMAS in GEnie mail. In
advance, thanks VERY much! And hurry! This is by far the best RPG computer

I was able to kill the purple worms easily (relatively, with patience) and
effecitively. I was very proud when I killed 4, which took time and patience,
but then I realized that my happiness was VERY premature . The third level
seems to have an absolute ENDLESS supply of baddies. Would the person who
left the note about how to circle around the purple worms please leave me
EMAIL about how to finish this level? I've given it about 7 hours of
frustration. SOrry I don't remember your name.
  TOMAS - Email coming.

EVERYONE! I talked to FTL today and tried to get them up here. They said
some interesting thigns. Most of their income comes from spelling checker
dictionaries, which they've been doing for years under the name OASIS (I
believe - they answer the phone as FTL/OASIS). This is where they get their
data compression from - 63,000 words in 100K. The fellow there called ARC
child's play and after seeing this I believe him.
He also said that in one version there were 50 bytes free on the disk, and
they were wondering what to do with all that available space - and they
enhanced the game some more. There are currently 6 bytes free on this disk.
This disk is formated in an extended format AS extended as possible without
running into problem on some machines (like those that cannnot handle 83
tracks.)
The AMiga version will be out in 1-2 months and is a bit faster and
smoother (because of their nice blitter) but otherwise very similar.
The 2 years of effort into this game went more into the SYSTEM than into
this game. The guy said that this game uses only PARTS of the possibilities
of the system they developed - there are lots of thins they can do that
weren't done with DungeonMaster. Expect the second game in this series in 6-8
months, with mmore than 1 disk.

I am on level three, what worms? I have seen things under rocks, but I have
yet to find a easy way to kill (at a long distance). My disk shows that there
is zero K free. Love the game, found one very small nit, if you can call it
that. One of my players just won't die as quickly as she should, I guess it
must deal with all the sleeping she did, with no movement (beyond casting
spells). A new version, yea! Where is my check book, if it is built as sound
as this one, it will be a big hit. .......Brad

Brad and others - "levels" has 2 different definitions, depending on whether
you count the hall of champions or not. I don't count it, since there's no
puzzles or conflicts really. Level 1 starts the next level after the hall of
champions, with me at least.

OK, in that sense it would be Level 2 -- with the complex of doors and
battles. You're right, Henry, this place crawls with nasties. Which one are
you having the worst problem with? Got into the Gem Room/Trapdoor? Is there
ANYTHING required in Level 1 to get the job done in #2? I'm really thinking
I'm missing something along the way.

By the way, can we upgrade to the more-byte version that FTL improved upon?
Even 58 bytes is worth the effort... Can you believe that we accept such an
upgrade with so "little" done to it??? Sheesh! It shows us and FTL what
they've come up with.

For everyone else, without any doubt whatsoever in my mind, go and buy this
game. For the casual pirate, if you guys have any common sense and want to
see 1st grade, quality products for the ST, support FTL and this product! It
would be the best entertainment software investment you ever made. Do
everyone a favor and pay the $39.95 for an original copy with documentation,
you won't go wrong...

HT, I'll try to go back and see how I made it through level three. I
csometimes go back there for food. Those worms aren't very filling, but they
do the job. Basically, as far as I remember, you have to fight your way
through. Be careful to watch for secret passages and hidden buttons. I find
that dead ends aren't always dead ends.....I've gotten to the very bottom but
I lack a certain key. I think I know what level it is on, but I had to skip
a lot of rooms because I didn't have keys to open the doors. I found a puzzle
that I THINK I didn't solve but I can't get by it. Oh well..

SOrry for the confusion, but the version with 50 bytes left was a beta - we
all have the newest version (6 bytes left).
J.CURTICE - there seems to be a trick. I go around in circles, and
OBVIOUSLY the monsters regenerate - especially if you keep going back to that
level for food. I remember a room with a mummy that said "he is my prisoner"
but I can't get back there.

This game is awesome! If you like fantasy games even a little, buy this one.
You'll be glad you did. Its state of the art from it crisp clean graphics to
it's synthesized sounds to monster that actually react appropriately in combat
(i.e. Run away when losing, chase you when wining, or hide behind corners so
you can't hit them with a fireball) it just gets better and better. I'm on
level 5 and loving every minute of this game so far!

A TIP FOR STARTERS, (I believe would be useful.) Use each chest to carry
only one type of item. Food is a good choice. Also, save your torches as a
last alternative for lighting. finally, save often!

My question for anyone is how to open iron gate, not wooden door, after the
mummy prisoner to get to following level? help!

Also back up your save game disks by saving twice (in good positions). I
believe the SYSTEM ERROR 52 meant a bad disk error of some sort, although I
did have the message "disk unusable" when I place an unformatted disk as my
save disk in drive a:.

Why can't we put save disk in drive b:?????

Mark - Conserve food! In the beginning there is an overabundance, but very
quickly you find that where you go is dictated by whether you have the eats to
get there.

V.BUI => That door is not crucial, if you must skip it.

Aha, finally, I am on level 4. Let me share a STUPID experience I was doing
to help you all avoid the same problem.

I saved the game facing AWAY from a door I needed to go through. I didn't
realize this for about 4 days after doing this. I would start up, and walk
around in circles frustrated. Finally today I figured out that where I needed
to go was behind me when I first booted up. I honestly wasted about 8-10
hours on this!! Be careful!

Also! On your save game disk, there is a backup automatically made of the
previous save file. Look at the save game disk from DeskTop and you'll see
what I mean. An undocumented feature.

I finally came up with a few things I think could be improved. I never feel
comfortable until I find a flaw in something - no matter how small. First of
all, this game COULD and maybe SHOULD sell for about $5 more. THEN they could
provide us with some really neato packaging like Origin does with all its
games. The Origin docs, and the little thingies in every package, are tops.
Secondly, it's kind of strange how you can throw the glass flasks and they
don't break!
Thirdly, does anyone miss any weird, tinkling music? I kind of do. Maybe on
a 1 meg machine?
Finally, I wish that the picture of your character would reflect the clothes
he or she was wearing.

An automapping feature of some sort would be nice. Someone on Scorpia's SIG
mentioned nailing tacks to the walls in games.
----not really needed in DungeonMaster since the mazes aren't that
complex.

All of these are really minor. They shouldn't be construed as me not liking
the game. It's one of the mosst incredible gaming experiences I've ever had.
No exaggeration.

OH! I got an error 52 when I accidently stuck in a disk that wasn't my save
game disk, AND wasn't the DungeonMaster disk. It wasn't a big deal - no
crashes, no lost files - I just stuck in the save game disk and continued.

While we're on the subject of improvements, the one I would like the most is
the ability to restore a game while playing. I often lose a character and
find myself jumping down the nearest pit in order to get the restart option.
It's either that or reboot...

That's fun! A good excuse to commit suicide and hear the scream!
Especially if you do it with the pit - you hear the scream twice in rapid
succession. Quite satisfying (although a restore game option would certainly
save alot of time).
The healing potions are of course probably the most important, and so is the
cure poison potion. I assume everyone can make those? If not, request EMAIL.
I also have a SURE FIRE strategy against purple worms. Request EMAIL.

Magic boxes => hold them in your ready hand to use them.

Anyone besides me figure out the poison gas spell? It starts as a dart kind
of thing, then when it hits a wall it explodes into a cloud of poison gas.
Too bad I can't get one strong enough to do any serious harm.

Also, here is something that I just figured out, maybe it'll help someone
else. Too cast a spell that requires more mana then you have, select the
first parts, but don't cast it, these parts will be held at the ready, then,
when your mana regenerates, you can add the rest, then cast away. Also, you
can use the same principle to go into battle with spells "at the ready".

Henry =>As to worms, here's my EMAIL request!

Does anyone have a trick to killing those rock piles? They take so much
damage, it becomes a bore. (Unless there is a doorway nearby <grin>)

OK, here are my suggestions. I don't like the way the quiver thing works. If
I'm firing a bow, I can pull arrows out. This is how it should be, of
course. But I can also set it up so I can fire one arrow, then pull a sword
out of the quiver (because the upper left-hand spot will accept a sword, and
it is the first to be pulled from.) Now, why can't I shoot all my arrows
first, then pull the sword? But no, I gotta pull up the character, grab the
sword, and replace it -- in the meanwhile being bashed by critters.

Henry => That was I who mentioned the spikes in the wall. It seems a
realistic solution to the mapping problem to me, as I am one of those who
detests mapping.

Anyone figured out the spell of magical protection? It's like the potion you
find in the chest behind the force field, but it covers the whole party.
                                        -Capt. Cook

PS: Like Henry, I mean that suggestion in no way as a real deterent to the
game. This is a must have piece of software. _Please_ don't steal it!

I've figured out a bunch of weird spells, and C.C.: I've made that green ball
one...(thanks for the tip on Mana)...I' ve also made a spell that makes a
green 'barrier' (it doesn't move) that justs explodes from where it was cast,
and does MUCHO damage! If I rememer , I'll let ya know!

Ok, SOMEONE answer me this time: What are the four best champs to start with?
And how do you use Alex's lock picks?

I think I can help some with character strategies. First of all, your front
2 characters should be fighters first and foremost, to absorb and fight well.
But you should use their wizard and priest abilities for things like light
spells and the weaker healign potions. Why waste your real magic users' mana
on these things? Your fighters should soon be able to cast the light spells
and weaker healing potions.
Your third character should be NINJA/WIZARD. This is because a Ninja shoots
the arrows. A fighter MUST be on the front line, and so a fighter is wasted
in the 3rd position. Plus if one of the front fighters is in trouble, you can
switch him with the Ninja character.
But develop the Ninja's wizard spells so he can cast those fireballs.
Your last character should be Wizard/Priest for taking care of everyone
else. However, he's weak so I always give him a shield.
Finally, Wuuf has the highest mana (I think he starts with 30 or 35) so I
use him as my wizard/priest. He's been very effective. (that's the dog by
the way).
And I like the character who has skills in all the areas - NINJA, FIGHTER,
WIZARD and PRIEST. I forget his name, but he's wearing green in the beginning
and he's Duke of something.
Finally, I've also had GREAT success with Azzizzi. She's the black
barbarian woman. She's mean as *&&* with an axe, I tell you. I've gotten 122
hits from her with an axe and one of the more powerful commands that she gets
later with the axe.

One thing I'm having problems with is deciding how to clothe the characters.
Azzizzi, for instance, is nearly stark naked....and I don't know if the pants
I put on her and the mail I replaced her little bra with is protecting her or
hindering her. Does anyone know much about clothes?

About the lockpicks: A friend of mine talked to Doug Bell the designer behind
Dungeonmaster, he said the lockpicks were originally designed to be used to
open chests. However, this feature was later taken out (you may have noticed
you can't find lockpicks). They forgot to remove the lockpicks from Alex
Ander's inventory. Just chuck those lockpicks at your favorite monster.

By the way there is a rust monster on level 8, does some damage to weapons and
shields.

Here is my favorite way to commit suicide: Stand in front of a wall and cast a
fireball(does upwards of 200 points of damage to each character and you get
to see the screen light up).

Fireball...those are those big green things, right? Oh yea, what is this
spell: ZO? I've cast it as LO ZO, and MON ZO, it spits out a three/four-
colored ball, and when it hits a wall BOOM!!! Big splatter! (especially with
MON)... But it doesn't seem to do any damage...oh yea, another thing I like:
just about anything is a weapon! (read: doors, pits, etc)

Here's something I'd like to see for DM: a maze maker! What would a DM be if
he couldn't make his own dungeon!?!?! (maze, above, should be DUNGEON) Anyone
plan on writing a cheat program for this game?!?!? I wanna see level 1E9! :)

Tried experimenting with fireball and fryed three of my party in a dead end.
I guess I didn't expect it to work. Learn by doing right.

Has anyone tried using the rope that one of the characters have in the
beginning. After about 20 hours and not being able to open the gate after
the mummy prisoner, I am wondering if I should start over.

Help anyone, E Mail would be great. I should learn how to use it.

Anyone find the room with "TIME IS OF THE ESSESENCE" necessary? I can't get by
that pit after the hidden door. I am wondering if a rope would allow going
up at the end of the passage in that pit. Of course, a new party would be
needed to try that.

Time of the Essence and The Matrix both serve the same purpose as the other
rooms in that series - they have key in them somewhere. For the Matrix, your
best bet is to have a compass, if you want email, I'll tell you how to get
through. Ditto for Time..., its a quick trick to get over that pit _once_ you
know how (Many a brave hero died trying!) To use the shortcut, manipulate the
object on the wall nearby in the obvious way, then look around, you'll see
it.

As for characters, I found Gandu to make a great wizard/ninja, with his poison
darts backed up by throwing stars. Also, Linfolas (?) the elf comes pre-
equipped with a bow. I usually reincarnate one person (I think - which one
brings you back with no abilities? I do that to one) and they almost always
end up with a pretty balanced list of skills. Except the she devil who has a
mana rating of 2! Great fighter tho.

Onward, and downward! -CC

PS: Henry, I too killed the mummy (they should all die that easily). Am I
totally screwed up now?

No Capt Cook you're not screwed up, but you made it so you'll get more
experience by the end of that level. (Alot more experience!!). That's called
looking at the bright side of things (grin).

Some questions are beginning to be asked over and over again and it's
getting tiresome answering them over and over again. I'm not complaining or
griping! Don't get me wrong! But I would suggest capturing this entire topic
and reading it off line. The command would be, REA 74 ALL DAT>871210

The ZO spell only works on some doors! In fact, I'm pretty far down and
it's only worked on 1 door so far.

Fireballs - this is pretty obvious! What is a fireball? It's FLYING
explosive light, right? (read the manual for more). One more hint -
EVERYTHING is equally dangerous to both sides, which is realistic. Your own
fireballs can kill you. And other things that hurt you (like slamming doors)
will hurt them. There's something else that hurts you and that you routinely
and instinctively run away from that will hurt THEM too. But I'm not going to
give it away.

Some parts of this game are so *(&$# obvious that it makes them hard.
That's just a general hint.

PS You're in for alot more!!

PS Capt Cook - I've found Linfolas (whatever his name is with the bow) to
be the most ineffective character of mine. I really am skeptical of how much
damage arrows do to monsters. The last time I think I actually saw an arrow
kill a monster was against the shriekers. However it could be because I fire
off all my arrows quickly with him, and it weakens the monsters but they don't
die. I am unsure. Plus arrows make the "tink" sound and not the "boof" sound
so it doesn't SOUND like they are doing much. Maybe they are. I am hoping
for a more advanced NINJA weapon.

By the way! I found a weapon today that's best used by a magic user.
Really odd - try all your weapons with all your characters!

C. Cook thanks for your response. I would like to know the 'trick' for TIME
... I actually started over tonight and reinc. Leyla with the rope. The
rope allows you to climb down into the pits without injury. Except you can't
go up without the blue transport mist. Maybe this is useful elsewhere.

I would want that extra key to use the short cut. After some invest- igation
on that level. (Since I still don't know what opens the door to the next
level - gate actually) I found that you won't miss much except experience
after dealing with the worms.

I agree that each person is most effective with certain weapons. Sonja is
great with the Fachette or whatever, but had slowed down in effectiveness
with the sabre.

Night for now .... EMail for these two ?s would be great Thanx ...

Well, congratulate me, I made it to level 4 (not counting the hall of
champions.) But... Is there a purpose to level 3? I kind of stumbled
through it, running from worms and all, and it seems to me that all those
little shelve openings in the walls, and all those carven faces, should have
some purpose. Also, as I believe I already mentioned, I killed the captive
mummy. Should I not have? Thanks to all those who have gone before me for
any advice.

If FTL comes out with another game like this, as someone mentioned, I hope
they develop all new magic/spells. I am having great fun figuring out various
spells, esp. since they are logically oriented. It'd be a shame if we didn't
get a second chance to puzzle them out.

Well, if they do make anyone D&D type, I hope it's one based on a mage's
trials to succeed from a life-life peasant, up to Master Sorceror(sp). And be
able to invent your own spells, have a lab, stuff like that... I mean, in DM,
it would be neat if you could have a MON FUL EW KU spell (from the syllable
definitions, that would be a Flame Demon), and have it work for the
party...but then again, I haven't tried anything that powerful, so it might be
in there...we'll just have to wait and see...(ugh, more patience)

I finally made it to the worms!!! And I've only had this game 3 days! (by the
way, for those that haven't yet seen the worms, they are uglier than those
blue guys with the clubs!)

I hate that door "Don't let a little door stand in your way" or whatever,
(took me MINUTES to get passed it!)

So, how hard are the worms to kill?

<Smile> Oh, worms are no problem, you can use your bare hands (YES, I am being
very sarcastic!) I have just reached Artisan on one of my fighters. I made a
big error at the start => I choose a character with very low mana (someone the
she-devil). Don't do this! As you get further down, every member of your
party must contribute to the potion pool. You can be crippling your high-
power magical types with always having to cast ful spells and healing potions.

jeff => I don't think anyone has gotten through that force field, but a lot of
us have gotten the chest [HINT!]

Ditto to J.Hands request. Ack! I feel I've tried everything! If someone
emails him solution, could you Carbon Copy it to me? Also, after the "I hate
to be ignored" message. there is a real pain maze, and at one point a piece
of wall opens up. But I can't trigger it when I am nearby. I thought of
getting some bad guys to follow me, but after being battered half to death, I
had to kill them. Any clues? Maybe I need something from the other side, but
I don't have the key to get in because of the above grate problem. Arghh!

Anyone figure out what the various necklaces do? Aside from the illumi??
thing, which is pretty obvious. Oh, and remember when I was telling you about
my character with mana of two? I kept trying to get her to produce a LO YA
potion, which she could attempt. Finally she got it, and gained a prietly
level, thus her mana was raised to 4. My contiually using her meager magic
abilities, I have her now to the point where she can at least cast light
spells.

OK, another gripe. How come, if monsters are coming now the right side of the
corridor, a champion on the left side can not hit them. This is pretty dumb,
and fairly umreal. Also very annoying when your left-side partner has a big,
juicy fireball spell ready, but can't use it because the whatever is coming at
the right-side partner.

HELP WITH THE ROOM AFTER THE ROOM OF RIDDLES. I spent about 4 hours with
this one and had to change my pants when I figured it out myself. I will tell
you what to do, in hint form.
First of all, go around that room and place objects on the floor and NOTICE
WITH YOUR EAR which pressure plates are affected by objects. Some are only
affected by people. When you figure this out, you've got it about 1/2 way.
You have to figure this out (what I just described) and combine what your
learned from TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.
I refuse to spoil the fun any more with EMAIL. By the way, this is a very
hard level. Not because of creatures but because of the puzzles.

Most of my headaches have come from killing stuff.

BTW Has anyone noticed that the creatures get much, well, neater the farther
down you get? I mean from a simple visual basis. Kind of an extra reward.

Wow! I've been gone for hours and no new messages!

Henry, thanks for the above hint, it was just enough a kick in the pants to
get me going. Now, of course, I need more help!

1) "When is a rock not a rock?" Huh? A clue, anyone? I can't get anywhere
on level 8. (Can you imagine restarting now that you know the spells that you
do?)

2) Level 7 => Man, what a pain. Among other things, there is a corridor that
goes on forever. Or seems to, its one of those teleport you back deals, tho
theres no blue field. Anyway, is there a way down this passage?

3) Test your strength. Is it necessary to traverse this hallway? I think
I've seen both ends. Is there something in it?

And last but not least, where is the IR key? Any hints or tips would be very
much appreciated. I feel the end is near, but you know what? I think this
one will have a decent replay value. Four different characters, new ways to
try things, and the levels below 3 get so confusing that I may very well have
missed something.

coins and better swords to show for it. I found a few more secret passages

assume it has to do with "When is a rock not a rock" part, but since there is
nothing in that area, I have no idea if it involves the placing of an object

Henry => Wish I could help you, but I found those keys strictly by stumbling
upon them, I think one was behind a door with a beholder guarding it...
really not sure. This level and all the ones below I haven't been able to get
my orientation right. I always end up booking from something I'm not ready
to fight, or after something that stole my favorite shield, and then, I look
around and say, "Where the f**k am I?"

A rock is not a rock when its a stone, but that doesn't help much, does it? I
tried slinging some lightning bolts around, but so far to no avail. Also
tried manipulating a gem, but there are no cracks or anything. Damn. This is a

  hello all John-Carter here

I see that 66 people d/l my map for the hall of champions.

Well if you liked that one the map for level 2 ( hall of champs being

to realize first i have to play the level and then map it out on paper
and then covert that to a Degas file ( that part takes the longest),
plus I work full time as a programmer for NYNEX so that doesnt leave
much time for sleep. I am only part way thru playing level 3
( still in the choose a dor choose a fate area ).

I am going to u/l an text file that lists all the hero and thier
attributes so you dont have to go from mirror to mirror all the time

I would like to compile a list of spells so if anybody has any input
please leave it as mail to JOHN-CARTER so far I only have about 10
including simple stuff like torches and stamina and healing potions

It takes a lot of time to do all this and apperently there are people
who want the info so please contribute to the list

lastly since there is a question about wheather or to put answers here on
the open board why not have a special Real-Time-Conf say friday or saturday
JANUARY 2 or 3 9pm est- 6pm pst to trade info
 or to put it simply........

Henry, i skipped those two doors myself before and when I went back, I did
find one key (but not the second). If you look around in the section to the
right when there is all that writing on the wall and you have a choice going
left or right (left is the section where the doors are located). If you look
around a couple hidden switches can be found. Be careful when opening those
doors. You won't get much more than a nasty surprise behind the second door.
The first one doesn't help much either.

I think the best way to handle the hints in the clear are by uploading of walk

want them don't run the chance of having the game spoiled by accidentally
reading solutions.

Mad Mike,
I furthest down I've heard is level 9 counting the Hall of Champions
(starting place so to speak. Number of spells thats hard to say, they are
broken into 4 divisons, power, elemenatl nfluence, form and class/alignment,
with each division having six syllables each and they can be used in all sorts
of combinations. Takes abit of getting used to but I'm starting to get the
hang of it, I'm on level three not counting the starting place and I've only
got the hang of about 10 spells myself. I've run into 5 opponents (I think)
but as you can see from the messages they are a bunch more I still have to
deal with. Back to the number of levels, like I said I've heard rumors of 8
or 9 and still going. Don't even waste time to think about buying this just
go ahead and get it, trust me - you won't be sorry. About my only two
complaints are copy protection (they should have done like Omnitrend with
Breach using a code word from the manual at the start of the game) and they
didn't give credit to the beta testers. Woody

I think the best solution to explicit hints is a walk through in the download
area. The private category initally sounded good, but I can see potential
problems with more than one game and BRO ALL. As for dungeon hints...maybe if
the Captain or Henry or any other kind, helpful, generous, wonderful person
were their solutions as seperate text files and ARC them together? That way
you can read only the specific solution you're interested in. Now...about

This topic is so busy that I really like the idea of a seperate 'private'
topic for explicit hints. If it ever comes to be, please include me. In the
meantime I need some help. I am on the 4th level (hall of champs being 1), I
have found the 'short cut' and found an area with a door on either side. I
have killed a LOT of worms (and needed to restore a few times as well!). I
understand theer is a mummy on this level that is near the entrance to the
next level. Will someone PLEASE leave me some hints/explicit instructions (!)
in E-Mail that will help me find the next level?

Henry, the two buttons in that section are interconnected. The first one
reveals the second one which reveals the key and other goodies. In the grave
of Filius, I only found a key and I some other items. I ended up with one
key and two locked doors. I skipped both of the doors and kept the key. Maybe
I'll need it....Got past WHEN IS A ROCK NOT A ROCK finally. I always knew how
to solve it but didn't believe myself since I was looking in the wrong place
(but the solution was VERY close by...).

This is amazing. A private category. PLease, someone tell FTL. OK, it's
pretty late now (you can tell by my typing) and tomorrow is New Year's Eve,
_but_ a convinced a friend of mine to buy this game, and in order to help him
down to level three, I created a new set of characters. I will do a couple of
walk throughs for the tougher doors on this level, starting with Time is of
the Essence (its hard to remember specifics without replaying) and u/l them to
the library area. These will be very specific, so if you want hints, capture
this topic. There are plenty here. I will do this ASAP. If this is not to
anyones liking, just don't d/l it (I will state very clearly in the
description what the file is) OK?

WOW, please let me into the DM category, I'm stuck already, but I can see that
I could spend days just experimenting with magic to learn what works as my
characters get more experienced. Light is pretty simple, but haven't figured
out fireballs yet. Just captured the whole discussion so I should get some
help from that. This is THE GAME for any computer. It is the program for which
I bought my first computer and my ST, I just didn't know it. FTL should make
a ton from this one as it is selling faster than the stores can get them. Hope
it keeps on this way so some other companies willl be willilng to put in the
time that it takes to do some more programs of this quality. I have seen
NOTHING else on the ST that is of this quality.

key and have fused the firestaff to the power gem. Now I am stuck!!!! If
anyone knows how to complete this fantastic game please HELP me. I need some

The IR key is on that level with some nifty looking stone golums (can't kill

(It's early on in the game.)

To save someone else the trouble of spending the time trying, I thought that
maybe I'd be able to go back to the hall of the champs and select another
person when one died (I had the idea of tranferring weapons from one party
letting them die and then getting another) but it doesn't work. You have to
ressurect them.

Someone, I think it was Henry, left a tip about wuuf having the highest, mana
rating. I don't know if this is the highest but it higher than wuuf, Tiggy
Tamal has a 36 Mana max at the beginning. Some kind of magicer Now if I could
just figure out anything besides the light spell, or get off of the level
below the hall. This one Hell of a game. It's obvious that you could play it
forever, even after completing it once, the variety of persons you could have
is fantastic. After you get bored with four people then try with
progressively smaller groups. Now if anyone ever finishes with one champ, I'd
love to watch that game. (gonna try Henry??)

JM.YANG I emptied a lightning sword on the dragon and fired at least 10-12 6
level fireballs and he just kept on coming! I tried everything the firestaff

have spent a day combing through the tomb of the firestaff level looking for

Henry - Don't have all the directions, but will send what I have.

I experienced a character rollover (I hope) last night. Very disconcerting I
had an Artisan fighter, who turned into an Adept fighter. No loss of
statistics, so I think that Artisan is highest, and if you do better, you
return to Adept to build again. Didn't work with it that much, has anyone
else experienced this? -CC

Major <blush>. Didn't adept come after neophyte? Guess not. Henry -> I was
thinking, that room with all the blue mists. There is a passageway visible
that I never got to. Wonder if anyone did?

Been having fun on level 8. I gotta SAVE after everything I kill. It seems
tough to me. Is there a way past the fireballs trap?

I must say that it's a PAIN to realize what level you are on and what level
others are talking about! I knew something was bugging me about this
game...and when I read Captain Cook's message about Level 8 and I tried to
start counting in my head, I realized that it was annoying me that you don't
know what level you are on ever, really, except for reliance on your memory.
CC, there is a way past the fireball trap, if you are where I think you
are. "What's underfood is soon overhead" or something like that?? The
solution is easier than expected - a combination of the ever-present pressure
plate manipulation with the quick movement idea first expressed in "time is of
the essence".
OOPS what is underfooT not food, grin....my characters have lost some
weight and I've been obsessed with food.

Henry: I can understand the obsession with food -- my first-created party
explored half of the second level ("Choose a Door") and most of the third
(purple worm) level on Stamina potions. Finally got to the point where I
could kill the purple worms fast enough to have a net gain in food instead of
a loss. Having just finished that level (I'm not "pushing" to finish the game
the way some people seem to be!) they're thrilled to see that for the first
time in a long time nobody is in the red or yellow on food. They even have a
Worm Round (sounds disgusting, but like I say, they've been starving) each.
Given the choice between a vorpal blade and a couple of drumsticks, I think
they'd take the latter!

Interesting point on role-playing: This same party missed several of the
puzzles on level 2 (didn't find the key in the Vault, for instance). When Lori
and I created a new party composed entirely of spellcasters (in order to
experiment with spells), we solved the puzzles with no problem. Just required
more intelligent characters, I guess!

My vote for the ultimate adventuring party would be Hisssaa, Daroou, Wuuf, and
Tiggy (two beaters and two casters). Get the front-rank fighters to cast Ful
and Vi spells at every opportunity, and pretty soon they'll have plenty of
Mana too. I'm running a slightly more balanced party, and probably won't get
around to experimenting with this. (Current party is Hisssaa, Elijah, Tiggy,
and um, one of the other shorties (not Boris) (can't remember his name).
They're doing well, but Daroou would have made our front rank more powerful.

Capt.Cook -- I haven't tried to map level 4 yet, but futzed around with it a
bit. I *did* manage to get to the passageway beyond the blue mists room.
Take a tip from the text adventure games -- every time you get to a new
location in the mists, drop a different item (make sure you drop it, rather
than pushing it forward into the mist). This lets you see whether you've
already been to a location, and will also let you make a "map" -- a state
transition diagram, really. 'Course, we'd dropped half our weapons and armor
by the time we got to the other side, but you can't have *everything*, you
know!

I mailed it back to FTL today so at least I'll get to report on how
quickly they mail out replacement disks. The moral of the story is don't
become emotionally involved with a copy protected program. When the sequel

I have gotten to the level past the level with the crazy "B KEY"s. That
includes getting through the crazy "TURN BACK" section. The problem is that I
only got through 1 of the doors that needed a "B KEY". There are about 2 or 3
other doors next to the one I chose. Can you get through those IN ADDITION to
the 1 you choose? It doesn't seem like it considering how long the maze was
in the place I chose.
There are even some other doors right past the "ZOOM" section in the
beginning of the "B KEY" section I chose. I can't get them open, either. It's
a tough area to map (I hate to map) and magic footprints don't last very long.
Sigh. Can anyone help with this area?

To Dungeon Master Gamers (smart people!),
Will someone E-mail me some answers to a couple of questions?
I am having problems at a couple of different places. First of all, I dneed
2 more keys (I think; I already have 1) to open up the Felstaff doors. I have
searched quite a bit for extra keys, but am unable to find them (have lots of
coins and regular keys!). I guess I am in need of locations on where I can get
these extra keys. I found the first on one pretty early in the game.
Also, I am having problems at the "Test Your Strength" area. This is the
spot where when I try to walk through, I bounce back!
And problem number three. When I try to go to the next level I am met by a
few ghosts. I've tried poison spells ( I think that worked on the first one
early in the game) but nothing seems to kill them. I am able to do any spell I
wish (I have the power!!) but can't seem to figure out what to do with these
goons!
Also, if anyone is interested in near the level of progress I am, and
wouldam and would like to DELETE LINE 16.
Also, if anyone is interested in doulbling up and working together via E-
mail (I am assuming that someone is just as, or not as far as me) let me know.
Two heads are better than one!
One comment on this game. This is about the first adventure game that has
not either bored (and depressed) me to tears, or I have just given up on
because progress was limited to buying the dreaded "hint book". I believe this
game sets new standards! Is the game of the year (for 87 and 88!) to me!!
  Matt Chandler E-mail = M.CHANDLER p.s. I've tried catagory 21
for help, but have not gotten any responses.

I have heard of a Weakness spell that works on the rock squid (as someone so
aptly named it -- ever think about the names you subconciously give these
creatures? You assume everyone knows what you mean.) I don't know it. I
know a spell that is supposed to weaken non-material beings. Maybe it works on
rock thingies too? -CC

PS: Anyone besides me get hopelessly lost as soon as you passed "Choose a
door?" At one point I got into the "Clockwise" puzzle, and finally had to
reboot. I got to a chest, and I know where the stairs are, its just that
there are several tons of rock between me and them. Finally had to suicide.

Also, I've mentioned this before, but, does anyone know the use/effects of the
various necklaces? Also, do the various magic items ever "run out?" 'nuff
questions -> snow got me out of work early today, and it's too hairy to go out
drinkin' so I guess its me and D M tonight!

seems to work - the metal gates work best but the wooden ones work but it

I've found that Rock Squids can be killed by any decent fighter or ninja
character by simply moving forward hitting with club or sword and jumping back
right away. Of course you have to keep in a position where you can move. Has
anyone figure out what the Poison potion is for? I tried to take it one night
to suicide my remaining hero so I could restart and couldn't. I speculate
somewhere where it could be thown into somebodies mouth? Maybe a large purple
worm? I haven't met them yet. I keep going back and changing by party. Think
I'm finally satisfied as I'm at the end of level two with 2 boxes of food and
everyone fed and watered and healthy, ready to take on the worms. (Of course
it helps if you can weaken the rock squids before you bash 'em but you can't
always do this.I really like the blue guys. Last night was the first time I
really just sat and watched them. Always before I was so busy fighting, or
casting spells I didn't appreciate them. They seem to have web feet and
tentacle tongues. Great artwork.

While chatting with a guy in New York, he mentioned the possibility of
capturing DM on a VCR. Can you picture it in 10 years? DM in the holoroom
with players exchanging adventures. Even multiplayer, online DM with
characters displayed as holos, full size in your living room. Each player
commanding a holo character, and some people choosing to be the monsters. More
than one party in the dungeon and you can fight the other parties as well as
the monsters!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god I may go nuts!!!!!! Where's my rapier??

Here's a point of interest. I have an adept fighter in my front duo with a
rapier and this combination(adept & rapier) plays Hell with the rock
creatures. The rapier has a selection on the action listing of usage called
"jab". As you know your character, after striking a blow, takes awhile to
recover for his next blow. With jab this recover is almost instantaineous, so
all you do is center your mouse over the rapier at the jab position and click
the button. This gives an effect slightly akin to a machine gun. Your
character does get hit and he might get poisoned but he walks thru these
beasties like Moses walking thru the Red sea. Good Luck.

M.Devlin, thanks, that's what I thought (thought someone said something about
flasks not breaking when thrown, but I threw a poison flask at a wall the
other night and go a great smashing glass sound and green stain on the wall
for a while.

I had the thought the other night, but haven't gotten around to checking it
that the rock squids should be vulnerable to things like jabs, thrown weapons
etc. when they are reared up and exposing the 'soft parts', but I seem to get
more hit points on them when they are down. Also seem to get more hits with a
sword than a club when it would seem that the 'rocky' surface might be hard on
a sword and a simple smashing club be more effective. Oh, well, who am I to
argue with reality? Now if I can just remember which one is real, this dungeon
with the gorgeous fighter standing next to me or that well lit warm room with
the beer and the computer sitting side by side on the desk.......argh!!

There are RUMORS, again RUMORS of a bug that prevents people from finishing
the game at the end, if it's attempted a certain way. Again, only RUMORS from
CIS>
One fellow says "do not attempt to kill Lord Chaos by pounding a door on
him...the game goes into an endless loop and you must reboot". I don't know
if this is related or another bug. We will have to get a full report from
FTL. Meanwhile, save your game often when you get to the end, so if something
screwey happens you have a backup.
Currently, I'm running 3 save game disks, which gives me total of 3 save
game files times 2 (there is a backup on each disk). Highly recommended. Very
advantageous.

Most flasks don't break when you throw them, unless they are meant to be
thrown, like FUL bombs and poison bombs. HOWEVER, if you move into the FUL
BOMB or the poison bomb AFTER you throw them, your characters get zapped too.
Be careful. And don't throw them against a wall right in front of you.

Yes, there are several nasty(undocumented) bugs in the very last portion of
this game when you are trying to subdue Lord Chaos. Some bugs cause lookups
others just prevent you from completing the game. Saving and rebooting is
essential. As I have said in the past the end of this great game is its
weakest link.

I originally left this message in Scorpia's RT and I'm reuploading it here
in HOPES of VAST quantities of hate mail.
I am WAY down on DungeonMaster, a fantastic game - about the 10th level.
Played for over a month or so. I still think Ultima IV is a better game,
believe it or not. It's got a "spirituality" and "variability" that is
lacking in Dungeonmaster a little bit. There are 3 kinds of DungeonMaster
trials and tribulations -
     1) monsters
     2) manipulation of keys, switches, levers, plates
     3) finding the right objects to use, and to place in the cubby holes.

Of course DungeonMaster has far better graphics, and digitized sound
(although no music), but I love some games with weak graphics (like Empire). I
guess that I'm saying that the plot in Ultima IV is second to none.
I love DungeonMaster, but Ultima IV has more options to keep you on your
toes...and worrying...
I will like to see how Wizardry fits into this.

I hate you Henry! (there, how was that for hate mail? <grin> I can't comment
as I haven't seen UIV.

Any advice on slaying the dreaded killer puddles? I have found one weapon
which does some damage, but, I hit the darned thing like 423 trillion times
before it died (honest, I played for 8 days staight just hacking at a puddle
<grin>). I want an evaporate spell!

Also, what's the deal with all those blue guys? I saw 4 of them materialize
right before my <tired> and amazed eyes!

I have found that certain weapons have special powers only by wielded by
particular types of characters. ie, my two front fighters are both priests,
and one also has some wizard abilities. When the one without wizard
abilities had weapon x, there were two choices, when the character with the
wizard abilities wielded it, there were three choices. Hmmmm.

Anyone besides me find the speedbow? My archer can shoot arrows/slayers as
fast as my ninja can throw stars and darts. Also, I _still_ want to know what
effect the jewelry has. -CC

I can't help you with the jewelry or the clothes. There is no way of
actually knowing what these items do unless one were to save game and try
different challenges with different clothes and jewelry. It's very hard to say
- because luck is also part of the combat and it would be hard to know what
differences were caused by clothes/ jewelry and what by luck. I know of no
way to answer. I clothed my woman barbarian only without reservation - I was
thinking that maybe she worked better with the "freer" movement caused by
little clothing that she came with.
Killer puddles don't like UPPER to position them properly (I won't say any
more.)
I think SPEED BOW (which I am using) delivers more hit points. I found
this out by shooting myself (with the help of some transporter device) and the
damage was significantly higher. The game probably cannot generate the images
any faster than it does already, however ....

Good idea Mark - I bet a thick "hint book" at 12.95 would bring in big
bucks.
Unfortunately, I have little confidence that such a product would be of
very high quality. Let's face it guys, the Dungeon Master documentation and
packaging is VERY POOR. The picture on the cover of the box is quite nice and
that's it. I'm not speaking about the program but the packagin. Oids is
similar - an excellent cover but poor docs, even poorer than DM>

That depends...if you can, get to a store and check it out first...

Henry: I don't care how good it is, just as long as it's accurate!
And the reason the docs are sketchy is because this is D&D! You're
supposed to figure it out for yourself! (no one ever told me
what to do in real D&D...now I've been in 2 state championships)

difficulty, exposing you to new concepts and ideas gradually. Fantastic game

Like you I have never been a big adventure D&D fan and I was a bit
skeptical about buying it (even with all the comments) after having been stung
recently, lots of people thing the new Star Trek game is great but I don't
like it), anyway....I bought it and have been totally captivated for the past
two weeks, it is EXCELLENT, great animation, sound effects, playability,
depth, etc. Go out and buy it - you won't be sorry. . .About my only two
complaints are it's copy protected (booo! - they could have easily don't a
keywrd check for the manual type thing), and they didn't give credit to the
beta testers (who deserve a big pat on the back and some credit for a job well
done)

I agree, M.NICHOLS, I don't like star trek either! Unusual, eh?

I must say TO ALL DUNGEONMASTER PLAYERS, 2 things....
   1) We all would have paid significantly more $ for this program, right/
Well, pay FTL back by buying their 2nd game, OIDS, a FANTASTIC game but a bit
of a sleeper. By buying it, you will be able to give FTL the business that
they deserve AND get another fantastic game.
   2) Ultima IV just came out TODAY for the ST. I consider it to be at least
as good if not even a tiny bit better, than DungeonMaster. If you like this
thing put Ultima IV on the list next!!

Finally, I was pissed at DM today because I thought I was going to walk in
and find the FIrestaff presented to me on a silver platter. Boy was I wrong.
Very loud Sigh.

I'm carefully avoiding asking for admission to topic 21. I have a shamelessly
bad habit of reading hints that I don't really need -- spoils the game if you
get them too early. Especially since one of the nice things about DM is that
many of the puzzles have multiple solutions. Got stuck on the room with
multiple triggers (three pressure plates, a pit, a button, and a switch) on
the "Kings/Riddle Room" level, read a hint on CI$ that I ought not to have,
and ended up solving it myself in a completely different way than suggested by
the hint.

One place I *did* get stuck on that level was in the "I hate being ignored"
maze area. Same problem as D.Fruchey reported in message 244 -- I step on the
tiny floor switch, opening a passage, but can't figure out any way to keep the
passage open so we can get into it. Maybe someone could send me e-mail on
that one.

I'm sure I've missed other passages (like the one on level 2/3 where the
compass is hidden (sure could have used that, started a new party to find it,
but my sense of "role-playing" won't allow me to go back there with the
advanced party). But that's o.k. -- don't think I've missed anything crucial
. . . yet! I've found that the x-ray spell is useful for checking out blank
areas to see if there's a room hiding that you may have missed.

work. I've tried several of the fourth level runes -- so far no luck, and it
takes a while to get a wizard that has enough 'down time' to regenerate mana
to experiment.

Capt.Cook - there is a skeleton key somewhere. You can probably make the
game WITHOUT getting it, but it's much more painful as you'd have to walk
through that whole level to go back up. I can't remember where the other
cross key is, except That I also found only 2. However 2 doors take you into
the same area - I'd try a different save game and go into another door.
Would someone please EMAIL M.DEVLIN a complete walkthrough for test your
strength. I've described it about 5 times and evidently my words aren't
descriptive enough.

BAUMANN - big BUGS at the end of the game....will upload a text file soon
about how to avoid the bugs at the end, as soon as I get it (soon).

Actually, there are *several* skeleton keys. I've found one on each level
with an appropriate lock (three or four so far). Having a lot of "fun"
mapping level 10 (some might call it 11; I don't count the Hall of Champions) -
- the "Turn Back" level. Finally made it to a golden keyhole, then saved for
a rainy day (funny thing about today...)

You've only told me twice, and when I tried to ask where the thing was, you
squelched me!

Henry - I found both the cross keys, i was wondering about a third. I suppose
I'll have to reexamine for the skeleton key, as this is the first I haven't
found.

I was at the dealers today Henry, and no UIV! Wasn't aware that it was out!
Oh, and some one there spoke of an invisibility spell for DM, but of course
couldn't remember it.

I have an extra gold key from the six on level 2 (remember level 2!) and one
I found on the worm level (3). I wonder if I need it?

I am uploading an official text file from FTL about how to avoid constant
lockups at the end of DungeonMaster.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS FILE UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE THE POWER GEM. IT COULD
SPOIL PARTS OF THE GAME FOR YOU.
However, do grab it before you attempt to end the game - I locke dup the
computer about 10 times over 2 days trying to finish.
By the way, I have finally finished! The ending is real nice (except for
the major bugs).
