                                 ARKANOID
                                 --------

STUFF ADDED/CHANGED IN THIS VERSION:
------------------------------------
- cracked, packed, single-parted
- HD compatibility
- Mega/STE/Falcon030/TT/CT60/FireBee* compatibility
- Mint/MagiC/Geneva compatibility
- compatible with all TOS versions
- 8/16 MHz switchable on MegaSTE and Falcon030
- CPU caches switchable on TT
- fixed a couple of bugs in the code (dbra counters, score)
- fixed minor sound problems in Steem (high pitched sound)
- added 3 extra level sets
- added an option to load user made level sets
- added a high score saver
- added quit option
- added memory snapshot option
- added 4 trainer options

*NOTES FOR FIREBEE USERS:
-------------------------
- USB keyboards and mice won't work in the game. You'll have to use Atari
keyboards/mice or connect PS2 devices via an Eiffel interface.
- Some monitors may not support the FireBee's ST low screen resolution, the
output timings generated by the FPGA are not 100% yet. If you get a black
screen, try to use the VGA input on your LCD monitor by using a DVI->VGA
  adapter.
- You need to start the game from FireTOS or from Mint. Running the game
from EmuTOS won't work, since there is no 68K emulation layer in EmuTOS.
- There will be slight flicker on some of the sprites here and there, due
to the VBL interrupt not being synced to the monitor VBL (hard to fix,
  maybe some day).
- There's another minor bug in the FPGA/Videl that shifts the entire ST low
picture down by one halfline. This is hardly noticeable in this game,
  though.
- Snapshots taken on the FireBee can't be restored on other machines yet
  (and vice-versa).

Control F1 - F9 - load memory snapshot #1 - #9
L - select level set on title screen

Hidden keys on the Klaz intro text screen:
H - toggle 50/60Hz (on Mega/ST/E)
L - toggle internal speaker on/off (on Falcon/TT)

Please see below for original game controls.

LOADING USER MADE LEVELS
------------------------
The levels in this version can not be edited with one of the Arkanoid
editors, but you may still load user created/modified level sets.

Here's how to do it:
- edit your levels with your favourite Arkanoid editor. Use any other
version of Arkanoid to save your modified levels to.
- copy the largest file on your Arkanoid disk to the game directory
of this version. This will usually be a file named "ARKCODE.IMG".
Length of this file will be around 260kB, sometimes a bit larger.
This file will contain the modified levels. Rename it to "ARKCODE.IMG"
if it doesn't already have that name.
- this new version will automatically look for the file "ARKCODE.IMG"
on startup and use the levels from this file if it has been found.
- these levels will replace the original Arkanoid levels in the level
set selector on the title screen.
- if you want to play the original Arkanoid levels again, remove the
file "ARKCODE.IMG" from the game directory again, or rename it.
- this method will also work with the so-called "Arkanoid 3" mod by
  Mario, for example.

TRAINER OPTIONS:
----------------
- Lots of power-ups
Increases the number of power-up capsules hiding behind some of the
bricks. Also increases the chance for the more valuable power-ups,
like extra life or level skip.
- Break gold bricks
Makes the gold coloured bricks removable
- Skip level with S
Hit the "S" key to go to the next level
- Infinite lives

MEMORY SNAPSHOTS:
-----------------
Memory snapshots can be saved/loaded any time.

ARKANOID - MANUAL
=================

THE GAME
--------

The era and time of this story is unknown. After the mothership "Arkanoid"
was destroyed, a spacecraft "Vaus" scrambled away, only to be trapped in
the void. You control the Vaus and have to penetrate 32 levels and then
confront the "Dimension Changer" whom you must destroy in order to reverse
time and resurrect the "Arkanoid". Frantic action and split second timing
combine to produce the most addictive and compulsive game.

STARTING THE GAME
-----------------

When the game has loaded you may press the left or right mouse button to
start a single player game. Alternatively, pressing the "1" key will start
a one player game and pressing the "2" key will start a two players game.
Using the "L" key on the title screen will cycle through the available
level sets.

CONTROLS
-------

The game is controlled by the mouse. Left and right movement of the mouse
control the Vaus on the screen, so ensure that you have enough room to move
the mouse and a good surface to roll it on. Use either mouse button to fire
the lasers or release the ball when "Catch" is in operation.

The Spacebar will pause/unpause the game.

HOW TO PLAY
-----------

You control the Vaus craft which can be moved left or right. Using your
skills, you must deflect an energy bolt which will gradually break down the
walls confronting you. Certain coloured bricks must be hit more than once
and others are completely indestructable. Alien life forms descend at
random to hinder you but are eliminated on contact with either the energy
bolt or the Vaus craft. You are aided in your attempts with energy capsules
which are hidden beneath certain bricks and released upon their
destruction. Each capsule has a different power and is denoted by a letter
painted on its side.
These are as follows:

S - slows down the speed of the energy bolt, making it easier to
    position yourself

C - enables you to catch the bolt, move to the desired position and then
    fire

E - expands the Vaus craft, giving you more chance to deflect the bolt

D - disrupts the bolt into three separate components, therby giving you
    three times the effect

L - arms your Vaus with a laser, allowing it to shoot bricks and aliens

B - breaks a section of the wall enabling your Vaus craft an alternative
escape rout to slip through to the next level

P - awards you an extra life

STATUS AND SCORING
------------------

On screen scoring displays current score, high score and number of lives
remaining. Points are awarded between 50 and 120 for knocking out a brick,
depending on the colour. Colecting a capsule is 1000 and hitting an alien
scores 100 points. Extra lives are awarded for catching the "P" capsules,
when you reach 20,000 points and every 50,000 thereafter. If you reach the
high score table use the keyboard to enter your initials, then press RETURN
to finish.

HINTS AND TIPS
--------------

- The disruption capsule is of great use if your energy bolt is trapped
  behind a wall.

- The laser is most useful to break down bricks that require a number of
  hits.

- Using the very edge of your Vaus to deflect the bolt will give you a much
sharper angle, most useful for manoeuvering into restrictive places.

GOOD LUCK!
