Hello Ronald,

As you know I'm busy programming a smtp server. It's going well, but I see
some 'problems' comming up ahead. One of them has to to with resolving. So I
thought;'lets ask Ronald'

What is the problem. Wel as you can imagine (I hope) one of the jobs of a
smtp server is to forward non-local mail. Thus mail to recipients outside the
smtp's domain. My first thought where simple, just forward the mail to the
smtp server of that domain. For some domains this works fine only some
domains don't accept mail from outside their domain. This problem brought me
back to the rfc's. (back to the drawing board)

I found that it is possible (of course) to deliver the mail to a 'special'
mail server. But to find out the IP and name of that server the resolver has
to know some additional functions. (Our I think it must know)

Because I don't know a lot of how the resolver works I think it's only
possible to resolve canonical names [CNAME] and aliases (correct me if I'm
wrong). But what I need for the smtp server is the possibility to resolve a
mail forwarder [MF] and/or a mail destination [MD].

Of course there is no need for it in the 'normal' resolver. A normal client
won't use it. So I wonder if it is possible to create a special resolver
module that can do the job. As far I can see it should be not that difficult
to implement it. (our any other solution?)

The rfc's I looked are 882, 883, 973, 974 but you already have them I think.

Eabe
