Hi All,

Find enclosed an IRC chat with Lonny about trying to get this working.

This is wrong that

a. Lonny, Peter & Ronald are not talking about this.

b. We don't seem to be getting any closer to a solution.

I will pass on any replies to Lonny, so please post them here.

pmsg[lp] >>any luck with discussions over fixing this dcc with networks?
pmsg<lp> no, i will not make airc sting specific
pmsg[lp] >>I understand that, but is there nothing that between you and Peter that can be done?
pmsg<lp> i didn't discuss it with anyone. i am still convinced it's not my
job to fix it. dcc was poorly impelemnted when it was designed, however if
the masking breaks that not much i can do or want to do to fix it
pmsg[lp] >>did you receive the mail I forwarded to you from Peter?
pmsg<lp> yes, and it reads like i have to modify my program... thus i am not interested
pmsg[lp] >>but I thought you two could at least talk about it
pmsg<lp> but not much to talk about, i'd refuse to change my app and the discussion would be over
pmsg[lp] >>ok, but this is not helping us mere users though
pmsg<lp> i don't see my the mask module can't fix it, it KNOWS which ip's
are fake in the first places
pmsg<lp> my=why
pmsg[lp] >>that has been my point all along, I just thought you might point
that out as well, in the nicest way of course :-)
pmsg<lp> i think ronald should hook the mask module into the fucntion that
fetches IP's and if some app tries to fetch an IP that is fake it should
swap it for the real one
pmsg[lp] >>you see, that is exactly what I wanted you to talk to him about,
I don't know all this stuff, all I know is I cant dcc when my net is
running
pmsg<lp> i was told by someone who know tcp stuff pretty good that it can
be handled completely by the masker, so that apps need not be touched.
pmsg<lp> if done properly
pmsg[lp] >>well if you would be kind enough to put all this info in a mail
to me pleeeeeeeeeeease, I will pass it on to stik-beta-testers
:-)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
pmsg<lp> the machine that is actually on the net cannot dcc?
pmsg[lp] >>nope
pmsg<lp> i mean to say, if the network is up no dcc works at all?
pmsg[lp] >>dcc works between machines in the network, but no machine in the
network can dcc (send/chat) to anyone outside of it
pmsg<lp> that seems mighty weird to me
pmsg[lp] >>and me, but I don't know the answers :-(
pmsg<lp> the machine on the net should have a real IP
pmsg<lp> i would think anyway
pmsg[lp] >>if you remember we tested this, and that was when we descovered
that the modem machine sent a fake ip
pmsg<lp> since mintnet has no masking ability i cannot compare it that
pmsg<lp> might have to talk to some linux guys
pmsg<lp> and see what is the norm
pmsg[lp] >>so I went back to betas and told them, the mail I sent to you was the result
pmsg<lp> some of the sting guys have there ataris talking to linux boxes, i
bet you the linux box can dcc out if it's the main machine on the net
pmsg[lp] >>ok, but unless someone tells Peter & Ronald what to do I am still stuck
pmsg<lp> i doubt either of them listen to me, partially i stay with stik
cause dan listens to me if i have a problem
pmsg[lp] >>yes, but I shall keep trying :-) so if you wish to mail it to
me, I will keep pressing them
pmsg<lp> simply as peter if he has his atari netowrked connected to his
linux box... if he says yes then ask him if the linux box can dcc in both
directions. ;)
pmsg[lp] >>ok
pmsg<lp> i wish mintnet had masking, then i'd jump in to the arguement
pmsg[lp] >> TeeHee :-)
pmsg<lp> as it stands i don't know 100% how it works
pmsg[lp] >>ok
pmsg<lp> one thing that would cause me to tweak airc for sting would be if
ircii (the most used irc client proggy for linux) had some hack to work on
such a network
pmsg[lp] >>mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
pmsg<lp> as far as i know it don't, i have the source code for it
pmsg<lp> this tells me 2 things, either ircii fails on networks like airc,
or linux has way better masking
pmsg<lp> again ... not sure which ;)
pmsg[lp] >>ok
pmsg<lp> so until i find out more i don't modify anything on my end
pmsg<lp> i know who to ask about linux masking though
pmsg[lp] >>ok, thanx, if you have anymore info, please mail it to me and I will pass it on
