Soft fonts for the HP DeskJet
----------------------------

Even though the printer handbook keeps this theme under wraps:

The DeskJet can also make use of soft fonts!

For this two points have to be borne in mind:

- It won't work without an additional RAM-card ! For the earlier models up
to the DeskJet 500C one can also only use this RAM extension for soft fonts.
Only the DeskJet 550 onwards permits the card to be used alternatively for
expanding the input buffer.

- Soft fonts for the HP LaserJet (and compatibles) cannot be used since the
DeskJet expects a different format, and when fed with LaserJet soft fonts
will at best wildly flash its LEDs. Luckily there are some working soft font
converters (besides some unusable ones) but as far as I know only for MSDOS.
Best suited are fonts with the complete PC8 character-set, since for these
one can adopt the sample adaptation almost unchanged, and only has to modify
the values and codes for the characters/inch and the line spacing.

In this folder you will find, besides a special printer adaptation (driver)
the following soft fonts in the DeskJet format:

TI038R25.PCP: "Tiny" by Andreas Bagge; Character width 25 cpi, line spacing:
ideal 12 lpi or minimum 18 lpi, PC8 character-set, portrait mode, 8-bit.

LI037R33.PCP: "Lili"; Character width 33.3 cpi, line spacing: ideal 20 lpi
or minimum 25 lpi, PC8 character-set, portrait mode, 8-bit.
If the printing comes out too faint (saving ink!), try using "Bold".
