1 Getting Started

In this chapter, you will learn how to make working copies of your Master Disk and how to set up your equipment to use M.

We assume that you know how to use your Atari ST, that you're familiar with basic Atari ST terminology, that you know how to open, close and move windows, that you can use drop-down menus, and that you have some skill with mouse techniques, such as clicking, double-clicking, and dragging. If you're already an Atari ST user, you'll have no problems in using M.

If you have not used an Atari ST before, we suggest that you read the Atari ST User's Manual to become familiar with the basic operations of the GEM Operating System.

---------------------
What You'll Need

To use M, you'll need an Atari ST computer with a monochrome or color (medium resolution) monitor, at least one MIDI-controllable synthesizer, and standard MIDI cables to connect your synthesizer to the Atari's MIDI interface. MIDI cables are readily available at any retail music store that sells synthesizers.

--------------------------------------------------
Setting Up Your Equipment

If you have not had previous experience with MIDI synthesizers, please read the manufacturers' manuals carefully while setting up your equipment.

While your Atari ST is off, connect the MIDI output from your synthesizer to the MIDI input of the Atari ST and the MIDI output from the Atari ST to the MIDI input of the synthesizer.

If you have more than one synthesizer you can connect them in a chain using their MIDI Thru connections.

-----------------------------------
Working with the Master Disk

Now you're ready to run the program.

This software package includes a Master Disk which contains the program and the files you will need to run the program. Upon receipt of your user registration card, we'll send you a free backup disk.

Make sure you run the program on drive A.

Making a Working Copy of the Master Disk

The Master Disk is copy protected. You can run the program using the Master Disk or the backup. You can also run the program with a working copy, using the Master Disk only as a key disk.

To make a working copy of the Master Disk, copy all of the contents of the Master Disk onto another disk, using the Atari ST's standard desktop operations. Note: Using a bit copier may result in damage to your disk drive.

Then use the working copy to boot and run the program. When you double-click on the program icon, a dialog box will ask you to insert the Master Disk.
