The only one I know of is in the canyon level. If you hit the afterburners
twice in a row, you get something like 60,000 points, if you survive.

In the latest Video Games & Computer Entertainment, it says:

"In level 6 you must fly to the various airstrips and land. By doing a barrel
roll (Option 2 and L or R)
and holing the plane steady upside down while pressing U (landing) over an
airstrip, you are able to land upside down.
 **I meant holding***

This "Easter Egg" is from Eric Foirster.

I have been told that in new versions of Blue Lightning there is an easter egg
--- if you start at level LIFE and hit the B button (as opposed to the A
button, which you normally hit to start a level) it starts playing the game of
Life (Conway's, not Parker Brothers').

I've heard this before, and I checked into it. I've tried it with first
generation cartridges (no finger grips) and newer ones (w/ finger grips). Both
went into level 9 (LIFE) whether you hit the A or B button.

I have purchased the new game gauntlet III. Being a gauntlet player from day
one,(starting with the arcade version, then the original ST format, then
Gauntlet II for the ST, and now III for c critic for the present version for
the Lynx. The game is totally unlike I or II. In the game you have a
seperate screen for your inventory. I much preferred the original way of
dealing with potions and food. I do not want an adventure game I want a quick
arcade game and I think the game slows down to much by switching screens. I
also feel that III is too slow. I thought the original gauntlet for the ST
was also too slow. I had wished that III would s as quick as gauntlet II was
for the ST, but it seems that is (it) is pretty slow. Also the sound effects
leave alot to be ddesired. I always liked the "Pong" when you shot the
potion, I have yet to hear a good effect in the Lynx version. I have only
bbeen through level 8 and I have heard the same song the whole wway through. I
am really hoping for a good game for the Lynx b but so far I have bought all
the cartriges and I still think the only one worth purchasing is Gates of
Zendocon. Please tell me how far yyou have gone in Gauntlet III and let me
know if it is worth continuing.

I was really disappointed that there are no digitized voices saying, "Wizard
needs food badly" or the like. That was always fun! The sound effects are
dismal, and game play is nothing like the originals, altho it is quite
difficult so far.

I think Chip's is the best game yet, altho GOZ has the best sound and visual
effects (altho it was too easy).

I too thought that GIII was too easy. This is especially true if you use the
wizard and increase his strength with spells. I finished thee game the third
time I played it. I hope that if there is another one that it is more
challenging and bigger as well. I also miss the digitized voices with the

Hello to all Lynx owners! I have some great info that you all may find very
exciting since you will be able to show off the graphics power of the Lynx
even more. I have found the secret level on Chip;s Challenge!! It has nothing
to do with the game, however, it is incredible!!! I will not say anything as
to what the level is, however, when you get there, wait a few seconds before
you freak out, there is nothing wrong with the Lynx - you will see after a
couple of seconds what the level is. Once you realize what is happening on
the screen, press the different buttons for more excitement (you'll get the
hang of it, trust me!). In any case finding this Easter Egg what amazing, and
above all, it shows off the Lynx even more! Well enough with the suspense -
the code you need to get to the secret level is "MAND". Try it out and leave
me email as to what you think of this Easter Egg!!! If anyone else out there
has any other Easter Eggs (I have a feeling that ElectroCop has one (it seems
to me that it a good candidate for an Easter Egg due to the nature of the
game)), please inform the Lynx owners... Enjoy, and I hope you find this
Easter Egg as much fun as I found it! I'll be calling back later tonight to
see if anyone has already tried and see your response! Until then, happy
Lynx'n.

It definitely shows off the machine...

If you have Gates of Zendocon, you can see a little of what we are talking

Anyone found any Easter Eggs on Blue Lightning?

R.MUNOZ: Rats -- I found MAND also, and I was all set to post it here. You can
really tell by the easter eggs and levels in the various games for the Lynx
that the programmers see the Lynx as a lot more than a "portable NES". There
is one level in GoZ, for example, in which the "monsters" are cells in a game
of Life (Conway's, not the board game), and the background in BROT. And of
course Chip's Challenge is a much more thought provoking game than your
typical shoot-em-up!

Level 25 is one of the levels I don't have the pass word for any more.
Leave the pass word and I'll see if I can remember how I did it. Level 52
is the level where you have to ride across the magnetic pad underneath the
mouth. Wait for the large hole in the bug pattern and then walk with the bugs
until you hit the one square magnatic floor. Run backwards into it so you
bounce two times and then run out the side you were on first. Now go back to
the other side and get the chip in the closing walls. Then push the block
next to the pool up against the top wall and out between the large pool and
the little pool thats in the wall. Next go under the blue bouncing ball and
push the block between it and the button straight across into the large pool.
Now you can go out the door you came in and ride the magnetic floor over to
the first side. Walk around get the chip above the exit, push the block in
the water and leave! Hope thats not to much help!
I was showing some guy my Lynx the other day and he said,"Thats the one
the kid takes in the bathroom....thats great!" Well thats not word for word
but pretty close. I think Chips Challenge is probable better for you then
half the stuff they teach you in school anyway. I was always told school
offered a range of classes so a person could be well rounded when he entered
the real world. I'd rather be the best at one thing then average at
everything. I think education should teach the individual how to remain an
individual instead of how to conform to standards set by other average people.
What does that have to do with the Lynx Ad, nothing at all but I think the
commercials great and doesn't corrupt kids at all! Until later....

a new level: 47 - PIER SEVEN - LXPP. How in the heck do I get to the middle

Has anyone else noticed in Chip's that it is possible to shove a block one
direction and travel another? Kind of a side-slip. It seems that you can
joypad diaganol, then perpendicular to the block travel. I wonder if it was
programmed to react that way? It seems to make some puzzles (like MONSTER
LAB) really easy...

B.King8,
All you have to do in level 47 is come up from the bottom. Just aim for
the square on the left it lines up with the center (you probable already made
it?) Level 48 is to hard to explain but practice makes perfect so keep at it.
You have to keep moving on the magnetic floor so that you hit the transporters
at a different angle then normal. Go through the middle thief straight below
you at the start, after that experience wil teach you. Use the force Luke!
I think Atari should be using the STe for a developers kit. What
computer company doesn't have the faith in it's own computers to use them. If
it was my company, I'd make developer kits for as many computers as possible
starting with my own. I'd sell them just above cost and hire people to
provide technical assistance. Then set up a system to publish programmers
games for a percentage that would help support the system and keep it intact
for future use. The most expensive computers in the world are only worth the
programs that run

Thought I tried that once, but obviously I did something wrong. Oh well,
considering the conditions I was playing under I can't say I'm suprised.
Thanks! Back to level 9/15 <grin>

If you are interested in playing with Mandelbrot Sets...try this code MAND.
Reply back with any interesting screens you may have come up with.

The latest (nov 90) Video Games & Computer Entertainment, says the following:

In the last issue we printed a code (MAND) for a secret level (level 145) in
Chip's Challange.
Well, Doug Shannon of Sunnyvale California has another one.

Level 34 called Cypher (using code NQFI) holds a secret.
If you can draw a map of the level you'll notice each room is a letter.
The first two lines of letters tell us codes to other levels,
while thethird row, spelling JHEN, gives us the code for a secret level,
level 146.

Hope this isn't old news.

Has anyone been able to make thru adventure #2 yet? According to my map, I
think I have found every chamber, but I can't find the exit!!! Just dead ends!
Help!

BTW: Adventure #2 changes from EXPLORATION to COMBAT when you comlink with
someone else. Have only tried it with 2 players... should be a real hoot with
8 people!!!

It depends on the adventure you choose... Most can be played either way but
Adventure #2 is specifically played in "Blood and Guts" mode. Last one alive

Slime world finally came in today (cols.Oh). I only played it for about 30
minutes but it seems o.k. Time will tell. My only question so far is what
does the "pop" do? Everytime I use it it kills my guy. The scrolling is
weird though, it goes up and down if you move the joystick. I hope it has the
play value of chip's challange (on level 87).

I got Slime World on Friday (Thanks BRE) and have so far gotten through the
first 2 solo worlds. "Pop" kills Todd in case you get stuck & need to die
(It's in either the paper manual or the online manual). I can't wait to try
out the multi-player adventures at WAACE.

Hi all! I just got some info from Usenet that I want to pass along to you
Lynx players. It is regarding the Super Secret Doors that are mentioned in
the instructions for Slime World. Anyway, I don't know if anyone has already
found these doors (if you have, pass along the info if it is different from
what I will providing), but the Usenet info talks of a Super Secret Door on
level 6 as soon as you get in shoot on the floor immediately to the right of
Todd - that is, shoot at the floor immediately to your right. You will see
the floor open up to another level. Enjoy if you had not encountered a Super
Secret Door. Bye for now...

You can use a Mega-bomb in 2 rooms at once if you drop it near (as near as
possible) a doorway. You can then stand in the doorway and watch the bomb go
off, destroying everything in both rooms and you won't even get powder
burns!!!

We SYSOPS at the STAR-LINX BBS have discovered how to 'climb' up those pits
with vertical walls of sticky slime!!!! We have also discovered a 'sub-game'
within Slime World which is only accessible at a certain screen--there is no
password when you pause it. In fact, you don't even have a man on the screen
for the sub-game, but you do get points, and you work in teams if you have 3
or more players.

Specific details will be released on Nov. 12 on the STAR-LINX BBS in Mesa, Az.
Call and fill out an application and you will receive full access within 12
hours.

I just got Slime World. I've been playing adventure #5 and am completely
frustrated. Has anyone gotten to the part with the long and deep pool of green
slime, the one right after the second room of
 shifting floors?

The code is 796168, go to the right.

I've completed adventures #1 and #2. This is my favorite LYNX game so far,
before it was ElectroCop.

Some one tell me how to get through this part before I feed the cartridge to
my dog!

(Although I"d probably go out and replace it the next day)

You need a can of cleanser or a slime shield to get through that long pool

You're sick of #3 too. I can't find the exit either. So far no one has been
able to help me. have you finished the logic one (#5?)? If so could you tell
me how to get through the big pool of slime? It's to the east(right) of where
you appear with code #796168. Just before it are some of theose wierd stars
that ruin your equipment so I can't take some cleanser with me. And, I used a
shield just before the wierd stars and it doesn't last long enough.

Alexandri, for you question on level 5, I believe that there is a red crystal
or a slime shield at the bottem of one of the "hills" under the slime, just
when you are at the bottem, pull down to pick it up. I think that is what you
are talking about. It has been a while since I solved that one.. Hope this
helps Oh yeah, there is also a secret passage prior to entering that room,
look at you map to find it. talk to you later.

Here's how you get past (if you haven't figured it out yet).

1) Climb down the wall on the left side.

2) Before you reach the first slime pit, jump to the right wall.

3) Climb down the right wall until you fall into the second slime pit.

4) At the bottom of slime pit #2 is a super slime gem. You gotta find it.

5) Just climb through the rest.

Still haven't solved #3 yet. I see one room I can't get to by jumping
(relatively early on) which I bet leads to the exit. I must need to carry
back a jet pack or something... HELP! I am very frustrated!

I'm working on level #6 now, but it looks to be slooow going...

I just got it! And, boy, am I hooked! Found it at Toys 'R' Us in Las Vegas.

I do fine until I get to level five, which is where you have to process
forty tiles to complete the wave. Any suggestions on how to keep juggling the
tiles? I find that I start to lose it with about 10 tiles left.

Does anyone have any sure-fire strategies for winning? Thanks in advance.

Terry [OUTRIDER] - I hope you check here...I (well, not me, Aladdin)
inadvertently put my Klax topic in 34, not 36. I (now) live in Las Vegas. I
just moved here 1 Sep, and have been acclimating to the weather, traffic,
construction, etc. I _ONLY_ go to the casinos when I need quarters for the
laundry machines in my apt. complex.

Klax IS awesome. I love the "awwwww..." when you fail a wave (however, I
HATE failing waves - mebbe Atari can install a button on the Lynx just so I
can here the digital sound...naahhh!).

So, why didn't they ComLynx it? One person catching tiles ("Slower,
slower!"), and one person pushing the tiles ("Faster, faster!").

BJ.KING,

Welcome to Vegas! If you get a chance, give my BBS a call...

  The Rebel BBS * 1200/2400 Baud * 702/435-0786

There's usually lots of stuff going on in the message bases. And you can
find many of GEnie's files in the file sigs. :^) It's also now the #2
support line for BBS Express! ST, which is rather exciting, if you're into BBS
software.

I don't have a Lynx, but would like to someday. It's still hard for me to
justify spending that kind of money when so few games are available.
Hopefully, that will change soon. Glad you like Klax. Seems like most of the
games have gotten pretty positive reviews, which is nice.

In Klax one can score by getting three, four, or five tiles of the same color
veritcally, horizontally, or diagonally as outlined in the manual. How does
one get five tiles arranged vertically?

To get a 5 vertical Klax do this.
Get two tiles of one color in one bin and two tiles of a different color in
another. Choose on of the two colors and 'save' three tiles of that color on
your paddle. You can do this by dropping the tiles of another color, or by
throwing them back on the belt. Get the three tiles stacked TOGETHER on the
paddle. Having other colors in between will slow you down.
Now wait for a tile of the OTHER color. As soon as you get it, drop it on
top of the stack of two and then AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE more over the other
bin and drop the three other tiles on top of the two you already have. Do
this while the 3-vertical KLAX is being scored. When the game finishes giving
you your 50 points it will look for other KLAX . You will then get 30000
points for your 5 KLAX.
This is great for points waves and you can 'quickly' stack up millions of
points.

Is it just me, or does the Lynx version of Klax have the best digisound of any
version? It's clearer than the TG16 version, and seems to be a little better
than the arcade, but I could be mistaken. But, definetly a winner! (I work at
Toys R Us out here in Rochester, NY, selling video games, and we usually get
the new Lynx games a few weeks after everyone else, since they ship games to
the warehouse THEN the stores... We just got Klax a week or two ago.) Very
addictive, though...

Jeff,

Perhaps you could explain why Toys R Us has elected to remove the Lynx game
carts from the "flip card" isle in many of its stores? Just when we are
drowning in Lynx games (as one game magazine put it) they decide to move out
of "cartridge alley". Why?

Mark - Why don't you just ask your local store? Apparently there is a lot of
variation from location to location. I know locally I've seen everything from

Here in Hawaii, Toys R Us has opened their first store. I saw four Lynx boxes
of which none of them were for sale. Not Lynx carts in sight. Three days
later (when I walked in) the boxes were gone.

But it looks like they're headed for video armegeddon with Nintendo. They do
have the TG16, but not in the quantity of Nintendo and Gameboy.

End of line.

I've had KLAX about a week now and still have trouble getting past level 12.
The people in my office love the sound effects, but if I let them try it I
lose the machine for the rest of lunch. It is very addictive. As for Toys-R-
Us, theres no shortage of machines or cartridges here in Maryland. In the
display case they have LYNX and a Gameboy both running demos. After seeing
both running, I still can't figure out why anyone would buy a Gameboy. If
anyone is holding off on buying KLAX, don't, you won't be disapointed.

Ah! Nintendo...thats why people buy the Gameboy! Thats the same reason they
buy the home unit over a SEGA or TG/16. I think most parents are
technologically blind. They don't know what the terms mean so they just buy
whats thrown at them. If I was going to buy a video game for the TV it seems
like it would be smarter to put your $100-$200 toward a home computer...
     The world is so logical!:-)

I've found that on level 11 it's relatively easy to get the "Big X" warp to
level 56. You just have to be lucky enough to get enough of the right colored
blocks.

While I have been having tremendous fun playing with the Lynx and the games
that I currently have (California Games, Electro Cop, & Blue Lightning), the
Comlynx connnection adds a whole new dimension to game play. Of the games I
have only California Games supports Comlynx, so that is the only one I've had
occasion to go head-to-head with another player with.

Let me tell you that after a bit of play where each player is trying to top
the score of the other, the emphasis starts to shift from "scoring the most
points" to "get the other guy"!

Last night, Kirk Osterman and I met in a suburban shopping mall and sat down
in the common food area at a table. We were going head-to-head with the BMX
and Surfing competitions. It was a riot. And we created quite a stir too.
Many folks would stop by and look over our shoulders. In fact, one of the
other people was someone I already know, from of all places, here on GEnie!
It was our own Gordon Meyer (GRMEYER) and his lady friend. I don't know what
kind of impression I made on him, but he was sure impressed with the Lynx!

Anyway, after thrashing Kirk soundly point-wise in surfing, we started to
attack each other, just trying to wipe the other guy out. It was crazy!
Those little surfers sure do spin nice when you hit them just right!

Another good thing about Comlynx play is that you learn from the other player.
Kirk was doing about 200 - 400 points per game on Surfing, but I gave him some
pointers about some of the things I had figured out about the game and before
long he was scoring over 1000 per game. I'm going to have to watch out for
him. By the way, I pulled in my best score to date last night on Surfing.
3745!!!

740 is pretty good for BMX. My high is the middle 600s.

32,000 on Half-Pipe is VERY good. I will check with the testers to

On level Zeta, there is a round ball shaped thing that moves up and down
the right edge of the screen on the fortress. Follow this ball thing up
and down the screen and watch for it to open. When it opens an "eye" will
appear. Shoot this eye. Then your entire screen will light up with lots
 of explosions.

After this, you have to fight the big alien. I hate to give away to much
more. You can figure out the rest. A hint tho, you are right at the end
 of the game.

I only have cali. games right now but there seems to be another problem oblem
well at least on my unit. When Surfing if you go too fast your guy
dissapears. You know when you're gonna dissapear when your elbow and the back
of your board are the only things left on the screen. When that hap
happens build up a little more speed and hit the air. the points will tal
tally, the water will spray when your board hits the water. The only thing i
thing is that you will not be able to see yourself or the board. This also
happens if you ride in the tube for 69 seconds( Or from the beginning of the
run until the clock says 21 sec.).
Besides that my highs are 805 BMX, ~6000 Surfing, 28,000 half-pipe, and
60,000 footbag.

Recently had an opportunity to play multi-player California Games with some
fellow Lynx owners (hard to find here in Arizona) We really had a blast
playing three and four players. Three player games work great, but four
players was difficult to get started without crashing the system, but was ok
once we got past the opening screen. Gameplay was very smooth with 3 players,
but 4 player surfing was a little jerky. One question--in multi-player
surfing, if you run out of lives you can scroll your screen back and forth and
watch the other players, instead of just staring at the water. Why wasn't
this option programmed in BMX?

I think 3 & 4 player action was a little jerky because the link software in
California Games was really only designed for 2 players although you can
"trick" it into letting up to four people play. I think John Townsend
mentioned this a long time ago. It seems as if the networking software is
built into each game cart that needs it, so if a new Comlynx protocol is
developed they can use it without having to change the actual Lynx hardware.

I had a chance to try multi-player California games with the only other known
LYNX owner in Maryland. It was great! We spent most of our time in FOOTBAG
trying to trip each other, but had a great time doing it. The other sports
are really good, and we were both impressed with the way the games ran
separately while keeping track of the opponents player. Its hard to explain
without trying it. I really feel sorry for anyone who has bought the "other"
portable game machine.

                 Waiting for more multi-player games,

The comlunx is great with Gauntlet! It really makes the game. I just got
through playing 3-way Gauntlet with some friends and I can really see the
potential for other multi-player games. While the Lynx is a great stand-
alone game device, the fact that you can have multi-players with their own
screens, sounds etc ANYWHERE you wish to be is something unique at this point
in time.

Had an interesting experience with the COMLYNX cable that I thought I would
pass on in case it would help others.

We had a real bad time getting either of our two cables to work. You know,
California Games and Gauntlet both would not "see" the other machine. We
played all sorts of games with the power-on timing between machines, but ..

Anywho, I took a continuity tester the leads. They're stereo plugs, mini
sized, meaning you've got the tip, the ring below the tip, and the lower ring
(if you're holding a plug up). Interestingly, the tip is not continuous
through the wire; only the lower and higher rings are. (Well, big surprise ...
it's a two wire cable). Still, 'twas a little eerie seeing tip disconnected.

I found that the plugs were not seating fully due to the plastic molding
halfway down the plug. They'd get most of the way in, but about 1/16th inch of
the way home, they'd stop.

They collide with the plug and plastic of the Lynx case.

I took an Exacto blade and carefully trimmed about 1/8" off the plastic
molding by the plug. So you know, the metal extends down that far, then
expands outwards. I trimmed the plastic much as a pencil sharpener would have.

Surprise, surprise, surprise ... next time I tried Gauntlet, it worked fine
the first try ... and it had never worked before. Ditto for Cal Games.

We had a disk cable maker extend the plastic a little too far on the GCR cable
mold, and the solution is the exact same. (That prevented the GCR cable from
getting far enough into the 14-pin disk drive socket).

So, if your cable is flaky and you don't mind violating your warranty (grin),
try trimming off the first 1/8th of plastic completely and tapering it back
from there. Just might do the trick.

 -- thanks, Dave / Gadgets

Well, if he won't tell you about it, I will:

Level #28: TRYX

In this level, the "floor" restricts the ship to the top half of the play-
field. However, there is a "hidden feature" or "easter-egg" which allows you
to access another gate "below the floor". Here's how you find it:

Immediately put on your shields and move the ship down, to kill the alien
tanks. Then, start dropping bombs (using your shields when necessary to kill
newly-appearing aliens). You will notice at one point the bombs appear to go
through the floor. At this location is an invisible "hole" through which you
can fly your ship. It will probably take a few tries before you get through,
because the hole is rather small. Once you get through, you maneuver through a
couple of minor obstacles and then find the gate. It leads you to the "easter-
egg level", whose name is " ". (Four blank spaces: this level, therefore,
can't be accessed directly as the others can because its name cannot be
entered.) The easter-egg level is fun. It also gives you all four alien
helpers.

Has anyone noticed a neat little feature on the level labled "BROT"? Not only
is the background for most of the level a MANDELBROT SET image... but the
little round monsters behave in a set pattern... the pattern is the old
computer simulation called 'LIFE'. There are many versions of 'LIFE'
available for EVERY computer ever made... so if your interested you can see it
on your home machine. I just thought it was cute that there is a LIFE program
on the LYNX now as well. It is also interesting to note how FAST it operates.
It is running faster than the fastest LIFE version I have for either my ST or
MAC luggable computers, AND there is a lot of blasting and what not going on
as well.
