System Enhancements

Everyone knows that Atari TOS isn't everything it could be. There's
always something that can be improved. These programs do just that.

Swat Those Bugs! Operating systems that crash are a fact of life for
anyone who uses computers, but you don't have to put up with them.
These programs fix those bugs.

FOLDRXXX.PRG
This file will increase the folder limit to your specifications. TOS
allocates only so much memory for directories, and once full, can
crash the system. In TOS 1.0 and 1.02, this could result in lost data
and scrambled disks. In TOS 1.04 and up, that problem was fixed, but
you can still run into the limit. Put this program in your AUTO
folder and rename the "XXX" to the number of folders you want to
safely access in a session. Take note: all versions of TOS are subject
to this limit. Also, ICD and Atari hard disk drivers also include
fixes, so if you have your drivers configured for more folders, you
don't need this. Freeware

HSMOD04E.LZH
HSMODEM is a modular combination serial fix/serial port accelerator
for all ST(e)/Mega ST(e)/TT/Falcon machines. It accelerates your
serial routines, no matter what machine you have, as well as fixing
the RTS/CTS bug. Freeware.

OVFIX1.PRG
This program fixes the "phantom typist" bug in the ST/STE computers.
This bug causes several characters to be written repeatedly to the
screen, and then the computer bombs out. If you've experienced this
bug, get OVFIX!

POOLFX92.LZH
This updated version from Sweden fixes all known bugs in Poolfix.
Both Poolfix3.Prg and Poolfix4.Prg have bugs which are dangerous.
Poolfix4.Prg also has another error which may cause BOMBs when
programs need their own reset-routines linked in. This is required
for "Rainbow TOS;" TOS 1.4 and 1.6.

SIMMFIX2.ARC
This small program allows the STE to recognize 2.5 Mbytes of SIMM RAM;
a "bug" in TOS prevented you from mixing SIMM configurations; now you
can have two 1Mb SIMMs and two 256Kb SIMMs installed at the same time.
Requirements: STE. Warning: You can't use your 2.5Mb machine without
this program in the AUTO folder, so make sure you have several good
boot disks with this program in the AUTO folder before you add the
memory. [see also SILKBT2E]

STE_FIX.PRG
This program fixes the bug in the 07/29/89 version of TOS 1.6 that
causes it to always boot up in low resolution. Just copy this file to
your AUTO folder. Requirements: TOS 1.6 and a color monitor.

FDCPATCH.PRG
This patch fixes TOS 2.05 and allows it to properly recognize and
format high density disks, if you have the right hardware installed
(like the AJAX chip and a high density drive). It is only required
for TOS 2.05; 2.06 fixes this problem.

WRAP_FIX.PRG
This archive cantains an AUTO folder program which fixes the TOS 2.05
Mono shift bug, and a program to demonstrate the bug.

Jazz It Up! So you think the Atari's interface lacks a few
"important" features? So did the authors of these programs, and these
files make everything work so much better...

Music To Your Ears. Have you got those bell blues? Here's some ways
to make your computer play music.

BEEP.LZH
Replace the system bell with whatever digitized sound you like. This
allows multiple entries of a BELL character to override each other so
that as soon as a BELL character is received, it triggers the new
sound, even if there was a sound being played. This program is easy
to use and personalize.

NEWBELL.LZH
Attach different digitized sounds to various system events.

DIGIVEC.LZH
Attach a digitized sound to exception vectors. This program will
allow you to change the three bomb error to a hysterical laugh, a
scream, or whatever you like. Even make a sound during disk access.
Great little program, easy to configure to your own special desires.
Any and all exception vectors can be configured to any sound you may
want. Freeware.

CLICK.LZH
This great little program will replace the dull "click" of a keypress
with any digitized sound you choose. It uses little memory, and works
on the interrupt system so there's no noticable change in operating
speed of the computer. Each key can be assigned a different sound -
upper case and lower case clicks, function keys, cursor control keys,
all can be given an individual "click", or assign ONE sound to ALL
keys. Simple to use.

The Visual Side. All those text files and manuals need more to
navigate them than the Atari TOS viewer, and these are real winners.

GUCK18.ZIP
Guck v1.8 is an extremely versatile file viewer from Germany which can
install itself as the default document viewer in the DESKTOP or
NEWDESK.INF files (also works with Gemini and Neodesk). It lets you
view ASCII and First Word Documents, as well as an astounding range of
picture formats; even view color pics on a monochrome monitor!
Shareware.

1STVIEW.ZIP
1STView is another great file viewer from Germany. This one doesn't
support quite as many picture formats as Guck, but it allows you to
view RSC files! This is an accessory, so you can load it at boot-time
or by using MultiDesk or the Chameleon (see below). Shareware

AV380.LZH
ASCII View 3.80 is an excellent text viewer. It scrolls by line or by
page as fast as any program I've seen. Install for ascii files, view
multiple files, and perform block operations. Requirements: ST
resolutions. Shareware.

M_VIEW16.LZH
Mountain View v1.6 is an easy to use text viewer that may be used as a
stand alone program, or installed as an application for any file type.
Mountain View lets you view ANY text file, and can decode First Word
and TX2 files. Shareware.

Two Ears and a Tail... The standard Atari mouse cursor is dull and
lifeless. Now you can bring it to life!

MKMII_21.LZH
Charles F Johnson's Mouse-Ka-Mania II is an excellent system
enhancement that allows you to change the mouse cursors: arrow, busy
bee, hands, and cross hairs - eight in all - to whatever you want.
You can make them different shapes, and even have animated mouse
cursors; change the busy bee to a Mac-style stopwatch, a spinning
globe, or whatever you can think up. It even allows color mouse
cursors. Comes with over a hundred and fifty shapes, some static,
some animated, and an excellent editor so you can make your own.
Shareware.

FUJIMAUS.LZH
This program makes a mouse pointer that look where it's going and take
a snooze after a period of incativity. It also replaces the buzy bee
with a ticking watch and puts a spinning or rainbow Fuji on the left
of the menu bar. It also has a fix for alerts that have no mouse
pointer. Configurable, and works in all resultions. Shareware.

BUBBLE.LZH
This handy little accessory helps you locate the mouse. When you
press the right mouse button, a little cartoon-bubble appears saying
"I'm here" This is a must for Stacy owners, where the mouse tends to
get lost.

DCTOPER2.ARC
DC Topper v1.2 automatically activates the window under the mouse.
Works with NeoDesk 3. ST, STe and TT compatible. Updated program of
the week. Freeware.

DC_MWRAP.ARC
DC Mouse Wrapper will 'wrap' the mouse cursor when it hits the edge of
the screen. Go up, and hit the edge of the screen, and the mouse goes
to the bottom of the screen! Great short-cuts, cuts down mouse
movement! Wrap up, down, left, right, configurable, and you can turn
it on or off with a key press.

RT_MOVE2.ARC
This program will enable you to move (as opposed to copy) files on the
GEM Desktop by holding down the right mouse button instead of the
control key. Works even with programs that use the right mouse button.
Requires TOS 1.4.

DCLEFTY.ARC
DC LEFTY will swap the mouse buttons, so LEFT is RIGHT and RIGHT is
LEFT. If you are left-handed, and want to use the mouse like
right-handers (so you can use your index finger to click on the 'LEFT'
button), check this out. Uses only 256 bytes of memory. ST, STE and
TT compatible. Freeware.

DCLFTARW.ARC
DC Lefty Arrow is a supplement to the DC Lefty program. DC Lefty
Arrow will make your normal arrow (which points left) 'flip' around so
you get a "left-handed" mouse arrow! ST, STe and TT compatible.
Freeware.

DCSLICK2.ARC
DC SLICK SHIFT v1.01 is a very small program from the assembly whizzes
at Double Click Software. It will emulate either the LEFT or the
RIGHT mouse button using any combination of modifier keys (CONTROL,
ALTERNATE or SHIFTs). This is a must for STacy owners (or others
too!) who get "trackball cramp". ST, STE and TT compatible.
Freeware.

MOUSE22.LZH
This handy little AUTO program allows you to hook up a PC Serial Mouse
to the Serial port of a TT030 or MegaSTE and use it in place of the
Atari mouse. Makes buying new mice ultra-cheap! Not compatible with
all programs. Shareware.

File Selectors. Tired of trying to find files with the standard Atari
file selector? These two programs make everything all better...

SELEC110.ZIP
An Auto program from Germany, Selectric is perhaps the most
full-featured and easy to use file selector for the Atari. It has
every feature you ever wanted in a file selector (and a few you never
considered), including pop-up menus, preset paths,
copy/move/rename/delete items, graphic display of free disk space,
file find, and lots more. Shareware.

LGSEL18D.LZH
The Little Green File Selector began life as the STart File Selector,
and like all of Codehead's software, just got better with time. Its
bullet proof, fully configurable operation gives you easy access to
every file on your disk, with features like preset paths, free disk
space, keyboard equivalents, file find, and more. Shareware.

For The Ease of it All... Two things the Macs have that Atari users
should have are:

RECV_CAN.LZH
The Recoverable Trash Can gives every Atari user the one thing they
most wish they had. Instead of permanently deleting files, it just
hides them until you choose to remove them. While it runs on any TOS
version, it's most useful in desktops that can install program icons
on the desktop; get rid of the old Atari Trash! Shareware

ALIBI17.LZH
Alibi 1.7 lets you set up "aliases" of any program. The aliases are
very small programs whose only purpose is to run the real program.
Very handy for hard drive owners; you could set up all your programs
with aliases in a single folder, and save yourself from digging
through lots partitions and folders. Freeware.

Expanded Menus. The menu bar is pretty limited, especially the
accessories, but no more!

CHMECUST.LZH
This is a little program which allows you to customize Chameleon
v1.19. It lets you set the default desk accessory for Chameleon to
load at boot time as well as the default shift keys for the various
operations in Chameleon. Chameleon v1.19 is included. The Chameleon
v1.19 is a very small accessory that allows you to load and unload
accessories, one at a time, at any time. Very handy, and very
popular.

DCSTUFFR.ARC
DC STuffer v0.9 allows you to load in more than six desk accessories.
DC STuffer loads in as an accessory and acts, looks, and feels just
like the desktop DESK menu, but with more accessory slots. Tryware
(version 1.0 also unloads DA's).

SAFEMENU.ZIP
Safemenu gives you the ability to control access to the menu bar. You
can change the standard drop-down menus to pull-down, drop down only
if you access the top half of the menu bar, or allow access only if
the right mouse button is pressed. Requires XControl. Freeware.

DCPOPBR2.ARC
This is a new version of DC PopBar, the DA that gives you a popup menu
of the GEM desktop menubar. Download this and see why this is Double
Click's #1 most popular desk accessory. Requires TOS 1.06x or below.

Brighten Your Future! Bring color, diversity, and the meaning of life
to your desktop with pictures, new icons, and new options!

DESKSW11.ARC
Desk Switch v1.1 from Little Green Footballs lets you load in any
DESKTOP.INF or NEWDESK.INF at any time. With this program, you can
maintain multiple INF files for different tasks, and load in whatever
desktop configuration you want, whenever you want. Shareware.

LOAD_INF.ZIP
This program from Klaus Pedersen in Denmark does the same job as Desk
Switch, though there are reports that it works better with TOS 2.0x.
Just install it as the application for *.INF files, and double click
on the desktop configuration you want! Freeware.

EASYGO20.LZH
Easy Go is one of the most flexible program launchers available! It
allows up to 240 programs to be defined to run with a single mouse
click (or key press). Users of Multitasking environments can use Easy
Go to launch any number of programs at once. MegaSTE owners can have
Easy Go automatically set processor speeds for selected programs, most
ST and STE machines can have Easy Go automatically switch resolutions
for running low resolution programs from ST Medium, and a powerful
MACRO language (with built-in editor) allows Easy Go to run multiple
programs with a single mouse click (pass comandlines, etc).

DESKFX.LZH
Use this great program to change your desktop around. Add background
pictures or change the fonts. ST Color Resolutions Only (TT
Compatible)

ICONES.LZH
This easy to use program was one of the first to bring user-selectable
icons to the Atari desktop. It allows you to change any icon
appearing on the desktop (not in a window!) to whatever you want. An
excellent program for people who don't want to spend either the money
or memory on something like Newdesk or TeraDesk. Only tested on TOS
1.0 and 1.02.

ICONDESK.LZH
ICONDESK is the perfect compliment to ICONES; it allows you to assign
unique icons to up to 256 folders or files and will definitely change
the appearance of your desktop windows. It runs from the AUTO folder
in any resolution. Written in German by Stefan Becker and Dirk
Sabilwalsky. Requirements: hi-res for the configuration programs (see

from floppy or hard drive in any resolution, any TOS version.

loads of options you don't get with Atari's GEM and TOS, like an
integrated CLI. Requires Hard Drive. Docs and program in German.
Shareware. GEM121E.ZIP is the fully English Gemini v1.21.

GEMINIC2.LZH
More than 100 icons for Gemini alternate desktop.

Runs in color and monochrome from the AUTO folder. Makes use of the
Atari STE's hardware scrolling, if present. Monochrome resolution is
1280 x 960. Medium rez is 1280 x 480. Low rez is 640 x 480. Freeware.

The Rest Of The Best. These programs add functionality, protect your
system, and allow you to clean things up!

PROTECT6.LZH
An excellent anti-virus Auto program which monitors for link and boot
viruses. It disinfects boot-sector viruses, and notifies you of
possible link viruses, allowing you to reset the system and eliminate
the virus before it does any damage. Takes up very little space when
running, and works great. Shareware.

the better screen savers for the Atari. It's a modular, animated

and easily make your own animations. Shareware. Latest version 1.39.

MIDNIGHT.LZH
Midnight is a "demoware" screen saver from Germany, and may be the
best screen saver for the Atari. If you've ever seen After Dark, then

tons of modules (some very original ones, too!). Demoware.

SCHONER2.LZH

pictures and sounds, set the system time and date, and lots more.
Shareware.

SILKBT2E.ZIP
Silk Boot runs from the boot sector of a floppy and polls your hard
drive for a ready signal. When it receives the ready, your hard drive
will boot up. This eliminates unnecessary wait, especially on TOSes
that have a fixed boot delay. If no hard drive is detected, boot will
proceed from the floppy. It also tests runs a test on your memory to
see how much you have available, and will configure 2.5Mb machines
accordingly (like SIMMFIX2). It even provides some virus protection
for your boot disk; if your disk is infected, Silk Boot won't run
(won't even exist...)! SILKBT2E is for STE/MSTE, SILKBT2 is for
ST/MST. Freeware.

NOROACH.LZH

That Other Stuff

Here are a few files that will tell you more about your system and
give you some helpful tips.

HD_TECH.TEL
This list of Hard Drive 800 support numbers was compiled by a member
of the Atari RT. It is provided for your reference. Please note that
these numbers have not been verified.

GLOSSARY.ZIP
The Atari Computer Glossary is a delightful file. It is a large and
fairly complete glossary of the most commonly used terms for Atari
users and computing in general. The glossary definitions are quite
extensive, some of them are quite funny as well! A great shareware
offer for the GIANT COMPUTER GLOSSARY is also included. It is
Freeware and comes with an excellent file viewer that is shareware.

STEADNDM.LZH
It seems some early STE owners did not receive the "STE Addendum" for
the owner's manual, so this author transcribed it into an ASCII text
file. This addendum includes the Rainbow TOS addendum and information
on new STE hardware such as the pinout data for the STE's 15-pin
connector ports.

INVRSVID.ARC
Here's a simple little trick with inverse video which can "dress up"
your doc files, and might even be used by creators of text files or
online magazines.

REVOLT.ARC
A disk-based "handbook" that outlines several methods in which, the
Atari userbase, can help promote Atari educational and business
computers in the U.S. marketplace. Well worth the download. Read it,
then do your share to help protect your computing investment! This is
a public domain document/program, color and mono.

PCMOUSE.LZH
This short text file describes how to make an adapter allowing you to
use any PC "Bus" mouse with your Atari ST/STe/TT. Handy for replacing
your ST mouse with a cheap, easy to find mouse.

POWERFIX.ARC
This file shows you how to repair the internal power supply that's in
most STs. Most power supplies fail for the same reason and you might
save yourself 50 bucks by checking out this file.

MONTRFIX.ZIP
This file contains two files that are also available separately. One
file describes how to enlarge the display on a monochrome monitor. It
doesn't give more pixels, but it eliminates that annoying inch of
black space around the screen. The other file describes a fix for the
monitor fade that some monochrome monitors experience when too few
pixels are lit.

VENDORS.ZIP
This is a list of Atari related businesses, and people. Software and
hardware developers, distributors, stores, and Atari related
magazines. A little out of date, but still a valuable resource.

DESKTIPS.ZIP
This archived text file gives one of the most complete descriptions of
the DESKTOP.INF and NEWDESK.INF files available. It describes the
use and function of the INF files, and gives some tips on editing
them. To help with the editing, it also gives a (nearly) complete
description of each entry in the INF file. Want to install an
application for more than one file type, or make multiple INF files
that each have completely different configurations? Then this file is
for you.
