(Since my mail to Stephen Jacobs keeps bouncing, i reply through the net)

Steph, thanks a lot for your information...but what do you mean it's not
stable? Do you refer to the comparison between ver 3.10 and ver 3.9 1/4,or
you compare it with another implementation of EMACS for micros?
I just didn't understand whether you consider ver 3.9 1/4 to be stable or not
IMHO ver 3.9 1/4 is good enough(i admit it's slow while reading or writing to
the drive, but, perhaps it's due to the fact that it uses the UNIX-like function
fwrite() and fread(), instead of the BIOS ones: Fwrite() and Fread()...I don't
know for sure, though)
Anyway, it has some other neat features (like C-mode for .c and .h files, sup
ports MWC's and Personal PAscal's enviroments + a lot more) and thus I can live
with its slow drive-access. Does ver 3.10 support all of the features of ver
3.9 1/4?

I would like to thank you again, and if you have the time please reply this
message too!

                             Take care!

Chris Lilley writes about the 'Bong!' in MicroEmacs 3.10.

You haven't configured it correctly. I had this going for a while too,
and it was annoying as you know what. Then I read the manual. MicroEmacs
3.10, unlike earlier versions, is a _GEM_ program, so if you're running
it from a CLI, you have to do something like:

"GEM .../path/emacs.prg <file>"

in order to run it correctly. If I recall, you also have to
INSTALL it as a GEM application from the desktop. Can't recall
right off the top of my head, though. Read the docs (yeah, I
realize that they're huge.), it's mentioned in there somewhere.
BTW, MicroEmacs 3.10 is _great_! (Supports the mouse and a whole
bunch of other stuff.)

That is a really old address. You should be using

archive-server@panarthea.ebay.sun.com

I had a similiar problem on my Mega... The only difference was that
the characters were appearing <very> quickly in the keyboard buffer. The
fix was to open the keyboard and put some shielding between the boards in
there, apparently some leads were touching or something. I could also
(sometimes) fix it by unplugging the keyboard for a second and replugging it.
I'm not sure if this is the same problem that your encountering, but it may
be similiar...

Regarding the phantom typist and hunting it down...

The TSR Newbell.prg (which replaces the bell on the Atari with
digitized sound playback) seems to make this bug happen fairly
frequently; all you need to do is pop up the 'About GEM' dialog
box from the desktop, click on anywhere _but_ the OK button, and
wait for the sound to stop playing. About 1 in 4 times, you'll
get multiple playbacks of the sound, followed by a whole series
of keyclicks (the phantom typist!). As soon as you press a key,
the typing stops.

Since Newbell uses the timer A vector, might something be going on
there?

Subject: external drive

I am attempting to connect a home-brew external disk drive to my 1040
with little success.

Parts used. Case with power supply.
Floppy cable bought from Best Electronics.
NEC FD1037A 3.5 floppy drive.

I am 99% certain I have the wires properly connected as listed below

1040 Drive
1 -- 30
2 -- 32
3 -- 3
4 -- 8
5 -- 10
6 not connected
7 -- 7
8 -- 16
9 - 18
10 -- 20
11 -- 22
12 -- 24
13 -- 26
14 -- 28

I stepped the ribbon cable to a db37 to make it look custom and
verified the wire placement with an ohm meter to make sure every-
thing matched.

The NEC has a four position dip next to its' 34 pin out and I have tried
it in all four positions and found no improvement.

When I power up with the external connected and turned on, only the
A drive responds and it does not recognize any data on the disk
( a window opens as A with 0 files. This disk has files on it).
If try to open drive B it asks for a disk for drive A as drive B. It
stills refuses to recognize any data. If I disconnect the external drive,
A responds properly.

I am missing something? I do not know if I need some more parts in the
loop or if I just have something wired improperly.

HELP!!!

Please respond to me directly, I don't get the digest. Thanks!
