These are files compressed with UN*X compress(1); uncompress with uncompress(1).
There is an ST version of compress - you'd use compress -d to uncompress.

I have tried repeatedly over the last week to ftp to this site, but it
is unresponsive. Does anyone know of another site which might have the
same stuff?

Alternately, could some kind soul who has a working connection to the
uni-koeln site upload the stuff to atari.archive?

Thanks...

Spectre (ver. 3.0) is not yet able to use System 7. There are some memory-
related problems. I tried it with 3840k free and all I got was a bomb.

I recently started to use OPUS. I would like to use the charting
functions but that requires GDOS. Since OPUS is the only program
I run which requires GDOS I am unfamiliar with the beast. I do have
a copy of GDOS version 1.1 which was included on a Word Flair demo
disk. Anyway, I have GDOS but where do I get screen and printer
fonts? Also, is there a good GDOS primer out there somewhere?

Thanks in advance

Sorry, but that's wrong. CDPATH defines a list(!) of directories where
Gemini should search for the directory given as argument in the cd
command. It's something similar to the PATH variable, which gives a list
of directories where Gemini should search for the given command. I'll show
you an example, perhaps you'll understand it more easily:
Imagine you have a folder structure like this:
c:\btx\
c:\btx\macros\texts\
c:\btx\macros\grphics\
c:\btx\pages\german\
c:\btx\pages\englisch\
c:\fido\
c:\fido\out\
c:\fido\in\
Now suppose you are currently working in d:\fido\out and want to change
into c:\btx\macros\texts\ to examine a text. Normally, you'd have to type
in the full path in order to get there. If you are using CDPATH, you can set:
setenv CDPATH='.,c:\,c:\btx\,c:\btx\macros\,c:\btx\pages\,c:\fido\,d:\' etc.
Now all you've got to type is "cd texts" and gemini will cd to
c:\btx\macros\texts. Got it? This is very powerful tool, you'll save a lot
of work, especially if you would normally be forced to use long paths...
The list in searched from left to right, so it's a good idea to put the '.'
in first place. Thereby Gemini will search in the current directory first.
/s/
PS: Are You using the english or the german version of Gemini? Take a look
at mupfel.doc, they explained the reason for CDPATH quite good.

I posted this question on GEnie about a year ago when I got TOS 1.4 put
in my 1040ST. One of the ST wizards (one of the CodeHeads or one of the
Double-Click boys, I don't remember for sure) came up with the answer:

***********************************************************************
* Trick LOGO by loading a RAM disk first (such as SI_RAM which is an *
* accessory), then load LOGO, then remove the RAM disk. The memory is*
* freed up and LOGO will then successfully load/save programs & files.*
***********************************************************************

Apparently, LOGO under TOS 1.4 uses (or at least thinks that it uses)
all available memory when it loads. I haven't programmed in years but I
would think it would be a simple matter to patch LOGO to correct this.
(HINT, HINT to Atari. Or better yet, why not release an updated version
of Logo to take advantage of the new machines? :-)

++ Question is, what would you do with more than 4 meg on an ST running TOS (or
++ MiNT). I've yet to exhaust 4 meg (even with GCC, MGR, and BASH. Emacs coming
++ soon... :-)

Try CScheme --- it takes 2.5 Mb (itself!) just to see the intro text. If you
actually want to *do* anything (even in 4Mb) you have to forget about MGR, et
al. and run it direct from the DeskTop (gasp).

Subject: VIDEO GAME RATINGS BALLOT [ATARI]
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

To use this ballot, just hit "R". Once in your editor, insert your game
rating between the word "vote" and the system code and game title. Your
rating must be an integer between 1 and 10. There must be at least one
blank on either side of your rating. Make sure the word vote appears at
the start of each rating.

If you do not want to rate a particular game, just DELETE THAT LINE FROM
THE BALLOT. When you are finished, SAVE THE FILE, and exit the editor.
The votes will be sent to the game rating tabulator.

The general guideline for ratings is:

8-10 worth buying at full price
6-7 worth buying at a discount, or if you're particularly interested
     in this kind of game
3-5 only worth renting
2 only worth playing for free, and only for a few minutes
1 worthless

If you want to vote for additional games, just add them at the end, in
a format similar to the existing entries. Be sure to include the system
code right before the title. This code is one of the below:

AL = Atari Lynx AM = Commodore Amiga
GB = Nintendo Game Boy GG = Sega Game Gear
GS = Apple II GS MA = Apple Macintosh
NE = Nintendo NES and Famicom NG = SNK NeoGeo
PC = IBM PC, PS/2, and compatibles SG = Sega Genesis and MegaDrive
SF = Nintendo Super Famicom ST = Atari ST
TG = NEC TurboGrafx-16, TurboExpress,
     and PC Engine

Thanks for participating in the rec.games.video ratings poll. (This

In this list, games have been rated on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the
best and 1 being the worst. For each game, the total number of votes,
the average rating, and the vote distribution are shown. New games are
indicated by a "*" before their entry. If a "(C)" appears after the
title it means that the game is a CD-ROM or disc system title. If a
"(J)" appears after the title it means that the game is currently only
available in Japan.

The general guideline for ratings is:

8-10 worth buying at full price
6-7 worth buying at a discount, or if you're particularly interested
     in this kind of game
3-5 only worth renting
2 only worth playing for free, and only for a few minutes
1 worthless

The vote distribution uses a single character to represent the
percentage of votes for each ranking. The following character codes can
appear:

"." no votes cast "3" 30-39% of the votes "7" 70-79% of the votes
"0" 1-9% of the votes "4" 40-49% of the votes "8" 80-89% of the votes
"1" 10-19% of the votes "5" 50-59% of the votes "9" 90-99% of the votes
"2" 20-29% of the votes "6" 60-69% of the votes "*" 100% of the votes
