   Personal Accountant
   -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I've run your finance package on my STe and there seems to be no
problems. I'm sorry but I haven't had time yet to play about with it
 properly. <Morf>

Obviously the real bugs, come when you totally rip the program apart,
 (see below).

A good choice has been made to change to C. It'll make it quicker and
you can get rid of that -bloody awful- mouse pointer!

Again, you must remember Hi-Res users. This is the sort of utility that
-would- be used by Hi-resers. I am lucky enuf to have both mono and colour
monitors, but seeing as I mainly work in Calligrapher and Cubase which
both -need- Hi-res, that is the res I usually boot in. Besides which, I
can put my Lattice Editor into 8x9 mode, so I can get 50 lines on one
page. Its a pain having to reset just to change res for one application!

There seems to be a bug on your 'pull down menu' flag. When I have
loaded a file it flips state, so that I no longer have them, but the
option is not ticked on the menu.

Finally, whoever chose the colour scheme should be shot on sight. It's
 AWFUL!!!!

Apart from that, everything okay, if not a teeny bit slow, but C should
 clear this up. <The Wiz!>

Everything you mention, will be fixed with the change to C, as I will be
using professional GEM windows, dialogue boxes and menus. I also intend to
use WERCS, and therefore a mono version would be no trouble. Actually it
would take little work to modify the STOS version to mono, but due to my
rather poor programming technigue used, ie poorly structured and no
comments, this task would be too daunting. If my Programming lecturer saw
this work he would have a heart attack.

I know about that bug, and I know the reason, thanks for pointing it out
 all the same.

Colour scheme?, what are you on about, I like purple - you haven't been
 speaking to Kev have you?.

   Boot Sector Companion
   -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The boot sector program loads fine (when I run the 520k convertor) and
seems to work ok - except when I ask it to give me a system status ! It
crashes with 2 bombs !!! So I think there must be either an
incompatibility with the STE or with the convertor ?! I've got TOS 1.6.
 <Morf>

I spoke to Glenn, shortly after publication of this edition. The problem
with the memory has been fixed, also I believe he is working on the system
status problem, and did have some success the other day, while trying to
get this option to work on my STe. Oh this option apparently works ok with
 ST's.

NOTE: This is a good example of what this group is all about. Glenn,
author of the Bootsector Companion only owns a measly 520 STfm. Therefore
he has no idea if his program works on setups over a megabyte, and
different version of TOS, and different computers like the Falcon and the
 STe?. (Now he knows) <iCTARi>

I think I may be experiencing the same problem as Nik has with his 4Mb
STE. I have an STFM upgraded with an Aeries board to 2.5Mb. When I quit
the program and return to GEM, my mouse will move but is completely
 useless, it will not click.

When installing a bootsector, in fact when loading in general, you could
do with being a bit more specific about the type of file you are after,
rather than just passing *.* to the fileselector. If you are like me and
using an alternative file selector (Harlekin or Little Green), if you pass
it *.*, it just gives you every file/dir in your current logged directory,
which could be a hard drive partition. You can't do it on an ICD drive,
but with the old Atari HD driver it is quite feasible to install -
something- onto it's initial tracks, which could cause no end of trouble.

The Menu could do with -normalising-, by this I mean change so it is
more like the -standard- GEM menu we are all used to. You know, from left
to right, a DESK menu, a FILE menu, with QUIT down the bottom where it -
 should- be, OPTIONS, etc.

You must remember Hi-Res users. This is the sort of utility that -would-
be used by Hi-resers. I am lucky enuf to have both mono and colour
monitors, but seeing as I mainly work in Calligrapher and Cubase which
both -need- Hi-res, that is the res I usually boot in. Besides which, I
can put my Lattice Editor into 8x9 mode, so I can get 50 lines on one
page. Its a pain having to reset just to use a boot track editor!

The end scrolly is very flash, but is not really necessay. It just
serves as an ego trip for the programmer! (soz, no offence intended...)

Otherwise, quite a nice, neat, promising little program, but I'll stick
to Ultimate Virus Killer. <The Wiz!>

It's true UVK is much better, but if everyone sends Glenn their
bootsectors, viruses, etc. Then he can make the Bootsector Companion much
better. It's also your chance to talk to the author, tell him what sort of
features should be available on his program. <iCTARi>
